Guppy Breeding Diary

Thanks. Have just bought 2 more males and 4 femaes.

1 delta tail skyblue show-class male
1 3/4 red and 1/4 white male

and

1 spanish dancer [yellow & black]
& 2 more females 1 has clear scales with red tail adn red line across top by tail

the shop also threw in 7 free fry but they were all gone by the time I was home :( [saves on feeding costs though  :hey: ]

I'm not sure I would trust the neons with the fry? I've found that my fry which are kept alone in a seperate tank away from any adult fish are growing so much faster as well, I guess its because they get more food.

It sounds like you have some lovely guppies, congrats on the fry too! Cant wait to see some piccies

I'm with Oldman on keeping the show guppies seperate, you will get a much better price for any fry & the fry will be healthier too.

Looking at doing some selective breeding of show class guppies myself, but not organised yet, I was thinking of keeping the males & females in seperate tanks, then choosing a male & female & putting them into a breeding tank, or divided section together to mate, then seperating them again. This way I will have total control over the fry I raise & can experiment a little with crosses to see what works, or taking the absolute best specimen from the males & females to get a really good quality batch.

I have no idea if this is the best way to do it, but I want a bit of control over the pairings, rather than getting crosses & then further crosses down the line.

Good luck & have fun, I will keep an eye on your diary :)
Yes I understand, but the neons are quite small, only about 1.5cms long.

pICTURES AT LAST. tHESE ARE JUST SOME RANDOM [KIND'VE BAD] PICTURES FROM A NEWBIE PICTURE TAKER. Sorry about Caps

Got this link from oldman47's signature
I signed up to this site to learn more about line breeding / inbreeding and there are a few pinned articles that make it quite simple to keep a good strain going
I started with guppies and have just got some sword tails from a breeder so they are my next mission

Cheers

I have the exact some guppy in the 2nd picture (black and silver). All my fry from that female have been black/silver from drop with the same colouration as their mother, now that they are 6 weeks old other colours are starting to come through from the black bar endler I hybridised her with.

I have moved the 5 neon tetras from my first tank into my nursery as people tell me they dont eat fry.

mmmm i got 7 neon tetras and 2/3 month old guppy young that grew up in my communcatity tank but the neon still try to attack them. i also got 2/3 weeks old guppys that out swim the neon in the same tank but the neon are still showing that they are ready to attack them

Thanks for all the advice about moving the neons etc etc... I've also got something to tell everyone...

I'm 12 years old. I might aswell tell everyone now rather than later.
So yeah, don't go crying to the MODS :good: Also, I've just found a dead female guppy that I bought a few days ago dead at the back of my tank. It seemed fine???

Yeah, no use combining show-quality guppies with LFS quality ones. Fry look nice!

(Also, why would the mods be concerned with this?)

i like this diary of yours!!! They should open up a whole nother fourm section dedicated to breeders who would like to share tabs (and make diaries like this one) about their current breeders! Just sayn.... :]

I especially like that guppy in the 3rd pic. I don't know much about them, but thats the prettiest guppy ive ever layed eyes on!!!

Keep writing!

Hey guys, I'm just wondering, would I be able to put a divider in my tank. On one side males and the other females. then, when the females get rid of any sperm they are carrying, I can pair up any 2 guppies by putting them in a breeding net in my nursery? Or would I be better off putting a net in one of the divided sides of the tanks?

I think a divider is a great idea

I think a breeding section is a brilliant idea, its a section I would visit lots, you should suggest it to the mods

The idea of purging the female and then isolating her with the male you want her to breed with is a good one. In the meantime, she will produce fry for up to 6 months with sperm packets from other fish so it can be hard to tell when to start her with the new male.
