Growth Log Of Hornbag

i hope it's a female then. lol.

Easiest and best way to sex them is by venting.

I wouldn't recommend keeping Flowerhorns with anything else. Even the Silver Dollars!

They do become very very aggressive, and do nasty damage to ANY fish!

Here is a pic of my boy at 2.5" at the end of Nov 2009:

Here he is again about a year later Dec 2010 at 12":

Note in the last photo there is a Blood Parrot in with him. She only goes in at breeding time, lays her eggs then is taken out.

Here is one of their babies at just under 1cm:

I know the silver dollars are a risk, but hopefully hornbag wont be to aggressive as he matures.
Your guy is a beaut.
What do you feed yours?

I feed him
*hikari excel
*vegtable flakes
*prawns

I can pretty much guarantee you he WILL become waaay more aggressive as he grows.
He will want the whole tank for him and only him. And he will kill for that.
What I find with FH, is if you put in fish that can dominate him, he will loose all hope and become very badly bullied himself.

Take my word for it!

As for my feeding, Main staple is Hikari Massivore, supplimented with Grand Sumo, Humpy head, ching mix cuts of fish and shrimp.

Thanks.

I have other tanks that that the dollars can be moved to if needs be.

My crapy lfs doesnt have any specialist foods. I'll have to pick up other foods for him when i go to better shops

I love the extended fins on yours

Its strange because in the morning his colours are darker but as the day goes on he gets lighter in colour

When i turn the aquarium lights on in the morning my Firemouth is so striped he looks like a convict! lol.

If you want your flowerhorn to show it's coloration, you need to change your tank a bit.

You need a background for starters. Blue is best for bringing out the color.
Next, your substrate is too neutral. Need either a bare bottom or sickly bright gravel/rock etc.

Flowerhorns LOVE all the sickly colored aquarium stuff (the kind of stuff your kids buy for their first tank) they react to it colorwise.

Also remember flowerhorns thrive in very high ph (8.0 is great) and I would imagine the wood in your tank is lowering the ph a fair amount. As will the plants.
This is why you see most of the brightly colored big KOK FH usually kept in pretty much bare tanks.

Also remember high temperatures are a must!

Thanks for all the advice

I have the temp set at 28 and have a blue backround ready to go on but the brightly coloured stone i think i'll have to miss lol the tank is in the sitting room also so couldnt bare to look at it.

Someone on a flowerhorn forum told me that i could have him turn green or yellow depending on the ph and temp but they didnt really explain it

i had 12 untill last week, treated them for calamanus worms and was told the wrong dosage, woke up to a tank of dead angels :(
