Green Water

my Aqua One 620 tank has had a green water problem for a few weeks now. ive changed 50% of the water instead of 25% every fortnight since, as i thought it might be a nitrate problem, but no luck. ive also turned off the lights and blocked out most of the light with towels for nearly a whole week, with temporarily solved the problem, but within a day of removing the towels and turning the lights on it was back.

also tried the shop bought remidy for green water, but it didnt do anything, and ive heard they dont work anyway.

its very rapidly getting worse, and you can tell the difference in colour every couple of hours.

does anyone know a good solution to greenwater problems? please?

Whenever I get green water, it is because I have been overfeeding my fish. I then apply a product called "Algae control" by Tetra and the water clears in ten minutes. The little yellow bottle says to remove the carbon in the filter, but I don't. I have both fish and a blue lobster in my tank, so you can bet it is safe for all but the weakest of fish. Blotting out the light will not work, you have to kill the algae and then do your best to keep it from coming back by feeding properly and keeping nitrates down as low as possible.

1 9" Red Oscar
2 3" Female Convict Cichlids
1 3" Red-finned Shark (Rainbow)
1 3" Male Three-spot Gourami
1 5" Non-common Pleco
1 3" Blue cobalt Lobster (who lives in a rock shelter)
12 Baby Convicts (That the Oscar is ignoring and not eating but hopefully the lobster will)
