Came home today and saw a fish tank sitting out by the dumpster. Hmmmm... Took a walk over there to check it out and see if it was cracked or had anything obvious wrong with it and nope! Looks like it's a 55. I don't see any cracks in the glass. There's algae on the inside, and a water line, as well as a bit of sand. Still a bit of water in it too (drops and such, nothing measurable), so I'm guessing that it's not leaky. Haven't checked yet, though.

The only potential problem I see is that the support bar on the top of the tank is missing. Anyone think that'll cause any problems, or is that bar mostly there for helping hold up the hood?

Don't think I'll keep the tank - unfortunately, we really don't have the room right now. I'll probably try to sell it. Anyone in MN need a 55? :)

I'm so excited about my find and just had to share!

Way to go! Cheap stuff is good, free is the best. The center brace helps to keep the longer sides from bowing out when full, it is something that is needed. If you are going to sell it, I wouldn't worry about it.

One of my 55gs was a garbage tank ith no center brace :)
My dad built a wooden frame for the top, brace and all :D
I don't know if you would be able to do that (My dad is a carpenter) but it's an idea
The tank is still running in one piece, no cracks yet :)

cheap and easy way to support something is strapping tape. if you dont believe me, get some, and try to stretch it 1/8 an inch
I think that the constant force of the water pushing out on both sides of the tank (A few hundred pounds ) would stress the tape into streching and possibly snapping at some point :dunno:

I also found a 55 with a broken center brace. I filled it with water, and you guessed it: the sides bowed. I think that a frame around the top would hold it. I, on the otherhand, am using my found 55 gallon as a reptile home. It is perfect for green anoles, geckos, and frogs.

or you can fill it up like 5 inches and make it into a crab tank or something
Cool idea!
You could keep crabs and newts in it!
