Gold Fish Companions?

Hi,

I have just sold my Juwel Rio 180l tank, the family that brought it did so as they were after a bigger tank. They have a small tank with goldfish, and wanted to keep them for the new tank. They went to pets at home who told them they could keep, catfish, shrimp, and a small silver type fish which they could not remember the name of, along with any semi tropical fish. The tank I gave them was setup as tropical, they have brought new sponge media to go into the tank. Are pets at home giving them the right advice? Having looked about myself fish types kept with goldfish seem to be limited?

Goldfish are coldwater, and generally do better in species tanks. However you could look at White Cloud Mountain Minnows if you have fancies. A common plec could work, but you'd need A LOT of filteration.

Edit: Shrimp will be eaten.

They can be kept in sub-tropical water (20-23 degrees C) as can Goldfish

I've seen WCMM's eaten by goldfish so therefore yes it is possible and I don't recommend mixing them.

Whilst goldfish are small then wcmm might be safe,but i agree,the rate goldfish grow at it wouldnt be good to put wcmm in with goldfish.

I was at blagdon water gardens a few months back where they specialise in goldfish and generally pond fish,and they did have several cold water catfish,but i can't think what they were called...

Hillstream loach would be ok and the larger Pearl Danios. Make sure they're aware though that tank is big enough for just 3 adult fancy goldfish. Orandas, for example, get the biggest. 25cm on average from nose to the base of the tail, so thats not even including the tail. They're big fish!!

Paradise fish? Can go anywhere between 20-28 C.

They differ in maximum size, so im not sure wether they will end up as food.

I have seen common plecos attach to fancies (particularly slow ones) and suck off their slime coats. Bristle nose plecos seem to be much more peaceful. Apple snails sometimes work, I keep one with my goldfish and they don't bother him. But others will eat the snail, it's a bit of a gamble.
