Hey Guys...

My g/f and I are going to visit some of her family down in Honduras for about three weeks. I was wondering what y'all think about me trying to collect some wild caught fish whilst I am down there.

Does anybody know if that can be a problem much like in Brazil ? Also, what should I do if I undertake this little adventure? I never netted wild fish before. Is it as simple as carefully dragging the net through the water?

Also, which fish are most native to Honduras? And the transport involved to take the fish(es) with me. I have read many a TFH magazine articles about the author taking the fish home with them. Was wondering if I should do the same -if feasible.

I will be asking the regulars in the IRC channel as well. But I get a larger responce here in the forums instead, heh. Any help would be greatly appreciated in advance. Thanks.

Regards,
nutty

Honduras, really quite jealous! Make sure to take pictures while you're there and share all you've seen with us.
As for the catching of wild fish, I'm really not sure whether they'd cause trouble over that. I know that some people on these forums have caught wild fish in various places before and imported them back with them to the US. However, with the liquid ban on planes going on right now I'm definatly not sure how you'd go about with it.

Hope someone will come along with a better and more indept answer for you.

Yeah, thanks guys. Will do.

Erised, I was just dropping off the first group at JFK Airport on Sunday night and noticed that peoples water bottles at the gate when being taking by security. I was unaware for a "lquid ban" until you mentioned it to me.

Guess I will give the airline a buzz then. Thanks for responding guys and gal... :)

Calling the airline indeed can't hurt, but I honestly doubt they'll allow fish in bags/poly boxes on as handbagage. They might allow it as cargo to go in the hold, but not sure how good that would be on the fish. Plus a lot of airlines do not allow live stock in their cargo hold. Still though, ringing ahead can't hurt =) It will also be worth looking up export laws for Honduras and import laws for where you live regarding live stock.

Free bump so you might get more answers ;)

Thanks Lenny. Very helpful... :)

Ok, guys. I am now here in Honduras. Having a blast and lots to do. Moutains springs and beaches have no words to discribe. Just "wow" will have to suffice. When I was in the IRC channel before I left, Jay-Jay was kind enough to inform me about Honduran Red Point (HRP). Would be cool to see some of them during my trip. Even if I will not collect any to bring back home, it would be nice to see some wild ones.

Also, in the July editon of TFH magazine just before I left the country, there as an article showing photo shots of different kind of chichlids. I noticed one was called Parachromis sp. "Honduras". Do any of you good people know much about them?

I am think about keeping/trying out these fish. I am sure it would make the g/f happy considering I am keeping a fish from her native land her parent are from. But, of course, I need to do the research first. I am new to keeping cichlids as we one have a pair of Kribs, so I have a long way to go.

Anyways, back to the vacation. I really appreciate the help y´áll have given me and we shall see what happens. Take care...

Kind Regards,
nutty from Honduras ;-)

Well, this sucks guys. I am back home now with no fish. I repeat, No FISH. :( Grrrr... I had to take advantage of the cheaper flight back home. The airline was booked for weeks and delaying just a few days longer would have cost a lot more to get back home. Plus, there are two of us, so that means I had to pay double.

We are going back during Semana Santa in March, however. So I expect to be ready by then. Thanks so much for taking the time to explain things to me, good people. Well, until then I guess it's playing the waiting game...

I dout that they'd allow you to carry on a bag of liquid onto a US bound aircraft. I think it's fairly illegal to smuggle undocumented animals into the US as well.

What kind of fish did you see while you were there?

yea that kinda sucks, that you cant take liquids on planes because some :eek:sama: made a bomb out of liquids on the plane.

So, any pics?

My PC and camera are not "talking" anylonger because my OS is falling apart. I really need to do an OS rebuild, but that takes hours and hours. I will have to upload the pics through somebody else's computer.

GuppyDude, further up the thread Lenny posted a URL with all the permits required. I will just be better prepared in March or May when I head back down there. Spoke about this matter in some of the chiclid forums. Apparently it is much easier to bring fish transferring in through Houston or New Orleans. But that Miami would confiscate the fishes. So now I know. Just wish I was better informed the first time around...

Thanks for all the help guys !!!
