I am planning on getting a tank made with the dimensions of 8'x 2'x 2', making it about 240 gallons. I was just wondering if anyone knew how thick the glass would have to be?

You're talking about 10mm with extra bracing at the top to hold it all together. You're talking about a tonne of water in there so better to be safe than sorry. You may find acrylic would be a better choice for this size of tank.

Pressure of water on the glass is based on height. So yeah for 2 foot would be 10-12mm.

So acrylic is better? I don't have any expirence with acrylic though, what would the clearity be like? I don't mind going with acrylic as long as it is pretty clear, almost the same as glass.

Acrylic is just as clear and has lots of advantages. The major disadvantage though is that it accumulates scratches faster.

Acrylic is actually slightly better for large tanks in clarity as clear glass can give a slight green hue when it gets to significant thickness like 1+cm. Acrylic is clear no matter the thickness, stronger, cheaper and easier to work with the downside is scratches.

Thanks for the info, I'll get a quote on monday for an acrylic 8'x 2'x 2'(240g)10mm thick tank with extra bracing on the top. I guess more bracing the better? I was think maybe three braces acorss?

Would love to see pictures of this once its built, that's gonna be one big tank.
What you gonna be stocking it with?
