the hedge...

It looks like your root jungle is keeping them contained!
Funny that she says they're fairly easy to find in the fish trade. 20 years ago they were everywhere but I haven't seen one in ages.
This is making me want to track some down though.....

I buy from both these sellers... and they are currently in stock...

my current ones came from Dan's...

I can't bring myself to buy fish online. I know, it's dumb, most people don't seem to have any issues doing it. But I like to see them in action, get an idea of their personality, and pick the best of the bunch. I've managed to avoid bringing home any sick fish too, even on the rare occasion when I've purchased fish from one of the big box stores.
Dan's has a great reputation but I swear his packaging must be gold plated. His fish are on the high side too. $10 for a hatchet seems reasonable these days, but it's $8 more than they used to be!
Yeah, I'm old. It sucks.

So far so good. I have found that the trickiest time is when working in the tank for water changes, netting something out, etc. Keep an eye out.

still 4 in the tank... they are definitely good at hiding... I think 2 in the picture, but I did see all 4

being as there is no cover, they can't lay in waiting for me to open it...

easily found all 4 of that hatchets tonight, in less than one minute... we'll see if the try leaping during their 1st water change???

well no issues with jumping thus far, but I am down one hatchet... disappearing fish are normally disposed of by Seamor ( the plant from little shop of horrors ) the large vine in the tank, has no problem of disposing of a fish that quits moving, among it's roots... I suppose there could be a hidden dried carcass, among the leaves above the tank, but I've not witnessed any jumping, even when working on the tank... of coarse the marbled hatchets have come and gone from the couple suppliers I use, so I may add another 6 or so pigmy hatchets to the group... I assume they will assimilate with the marbled... the 3 of those have settled in perfectly , and it's remotely possible there are still 4, as they blend in so well, but I can typically find 3 right away...

interesting... the hatchets relocated, after the last water change... they were definitely on the right side of the tank, I did water change late last night, and didn't notice them, but now this morning they are in the center, and left side of the tank... maybe they didn't like being in as thick of the roots, when the water level rapidly dropped, and refilled... I use pumps for both, in and out , and really try to disturb the fish as little as I can albeit a 33% change in water level... I have a little "rabbit trail" through the "hedge" that I insert the draw tube, and then fill tube through, to the tank, so the sky doesn't open up, like lifting a normal aquarium cover

I haven't seen all 4 lately... but my experience is to lose 25% of the tetras typically... so that wouldn't be unusual ( I know the hatchets aren't really a tetra ) but all the sellers list the hatchets and pencil fish together, with the tetras... so they must be similar, or at least by association

Well they are all characins so your reference is valid. Many consider the hatchets to be 'tetras' as well since the term references the trait they all share, 4 ('tetra') unpaired fins--dorsal, caudal, anal and adipose--which all Carnegiella (hatchets) possess.

interesting, that my unidentified tetras ( bought young in a group, and are not the fish I purchased ( I'm thinking they are lapis ) have started hanging out with the hatchets, at the surface, instead of all the palmeri ( which were also sent in error ), they must have figured out the one or two of them are not palmeri, and looking for a new group to hang with, the hatchets don't seem to mind...

the seller got more marble hatchets in, and since they seem to be fine, they'll get a proper size shoal, the rest arriving next week

well I thought I was down to 2 hatchets, but they can blend in so well... at feeding today, easy to see 3 of them eating... with the holiday this week, Dan's isn't shipping next week, so my larger group of marble hatchets is coming the following Tuesday

The 4th has graduated from hatchet to axe and is busy deforesting the jungle. When you see him next he'll be sporting a beard and plaid shirt.
