If you've never owned shrimp before I wouldn't start with crystals, especially since they can be expensive, the higher quality ones being 10$. If you want fish dwarf corys or otocinclus would be pretty cool in a heavily planted tank. A mystery or assassin snail are also cool. I know some people are probably going to kill me for saying this, but I think neons are fine in a 10g...or you could go with ember tetras, and a betta.
i have had ghost shrimp before and i liked them because they are cheap and when they die, they are crayfish food! there was a few with eggs but i don't know what happened with the babies!
the tank just has gravel and artificial plants. i have tried planted before in both gravel and sand and the plants died, and the remaining foxtails are in a bowl with the snails they shouldnt have came with.
how easy are moss balls to care for? petsmart sells them in betta containers for $7, i think and i think they are pretty cool. ooooh maybe i can get some for a smaller tank and have shrimp with my ADF, which i have done before and it works because they all eat blood worms and i dont have to worry about fishies stealing the frogs food
~Noah- i think a few neons are fine in a 10g
i love the small zebra dainos, but i know people on here would shoot me down for that. i also love the powder blue dwarf gouramis
on a second note~~ maybe i will put sand in the new 10gal and put my breeding guppies from my 5gal in there and use my 5gal (with sand) as a moss ball/ADFrog/ghost shrimp/male betta tank. how does that sound?
