hey guys ,

im getting 2 bettas tom.

1 male,1 female.
for my 10g.

i used to have a betta along time ago lol but didnt last for very long.:p

alittle more info would be nice:)))

Thanks!!!

are you dividing the 10 gallon?

What Jenste said!

What info would you like? Tank needs to be cycled and ready, each fish needs their own section, feed a quality processed food with frozen/live every few days, use plenty of live or silk plants, keep the temp around 27C.

ok yehh its cycled.

but why do i need it divided. are they going to fight?
i got the divider though

1. I do want to try to breed my bettas, but do i need to condition them first?
2. Will they be ok for with a common plec for a while?
3. After the male lays the eggs, what do i do?
and how long do i leave the male with the fry?

In order to breed you need dozens and dozens of 2-3 litre tubs to grow out the males, a large grow out tank for the females and a spawning tank. They will not just breed in the 10 gallon if left alone - they're more likely to attack and/or stress each other. It's not like breeding guppies.

All the tanks and tubs need to be heated to 27C and all need to have a cycled filter OR have very regular water changes. Sponge filters are best as they don't have such a huge risk of sucking up fry.

Male and female need to be kept seperate and carefully conditioned with quality processed and live foods. I would use Atison's Betta Pro and live brineshrimp, daphnia and bloodworms. They need to be fed small amounts multiple times a day.

In short - it takes a load of research (what I mentioned wasn't even the tip of the iceberg) and when not in the actual act of spawning the males and females should be kept seperate. Keeping two conspecific aggressive animals together is destined to leave you with highly stressed (and thus unhealthy and unhappy) fish or with damaged/dying/dead fish. Don't risk it - you'd just be playing with lives.

The plec will be fine with them but does need to be moved to a much, MUCH larger tank ASAP. Commons get to 12" + and should be kept at least 100 gallon tanks.

If I was you, I would personally hold off from getting a female and a male, until you actually have done your research.

The simple fact that you have had to ask if they need to be separated, shows that you have little or no knowledge.

Please please please follow advice given to you on here. Get just 1 male or a female or a couple of females but never put the opposite sexes together, without a tank divider.

And if you get more than one female, they should only be housed together if they have plenty of room (i.e. 10 gallons or more) and if you have at least 5. I have my 5 females in a 16 gallon tank and they use every bit of it. They also need lots of plants to help give them places to hide. Females can still be highly aggressive!

ok well i might get 2 females then and a male.

ill put the females in my 27g. and the male by himself in the 10g.

and yehh i know about the plec. ill prolly be selling him.

But first before i put them in the tanks i will take ur guys advise and grow them out in some tubs which i can find.

ill have pics up after i gett them.

Are you still thinking of breeding then? Please do some more research. It is a lot more complicated than just putting them together and then growing the males out. Do you know when to seperate them? What to feed them? How to recognise a viable tail type? How to sex them?

The male will love a 10g to himself. If you are getting females for the 27g, get either 1 or 5 so that they don't fight.

And the tubs to grow out wasa recommendation for the fry not the adults. You need to do a massive amount of research

well i already got them today.

i tried to get 3 females and one male but i just found out that one that i thought was female is male .
great.... :X

my other male is very nice. he's a viel tail and gold and full grown(pretty sure).both my females are really round.like super.not bloated though.
currently have them in the 10g with the little male. which isnt that agressive yet....
my other male well. it didnt really work out in my 27g for my bettas with cichlids. so hes in a little betta bowl for now.
i have soom betta pellets and some frozen
BS and BW and flake as food.

umm im still gunna trry to breed them but i still wanna do some research first so i can know what to do.:)
will have pics up sooon

Bettas and cichlids are a bad mix please listen to our advise there are some very experienced betta keepers and breeders on this section and i have first hand experience of the results of poor breeding as i work in an aquatics shop, it is never recommended to breed pet shop bought bettas due to genetics age etc. I heavily heavily advise you against it untill you have the knowlage and funds to do so it's not just a case of banging a male and female together it's a very stressfull process for both the fish and females sometimes wont let males near them and just tear them apart bettas are picky with their partners one of my girls would only ever mate with a certain boy i had if i tryed her with anyone else to get a better colour line she would rip them apart and needed to be seperated immidiately.

We will help you all we can but betta breeding is a costly, hard and time consuming buisness, best of luck anyway :)

yehh there store bought.
but i didnt know where else to buy them though.
and im not trying to make them breed right now. definatly not right now.

yehh i tried putting one of my bettas in the cichlid tank and well my cichlids were happy and thought it was food so i had to scoop it up quick .

Better quality bettas are bought online from proffesional breeders look on sites of breeders such as KG bettas and The betta lady, betty splendens is another good one for excellent quality bettas and explaining the breeding process
