took a video since it likes to move a lot. soon I'll be picking up a 20 gallon long tank for them to breed... For now it's behaving itself in my main tank, aside from occasional disputes with the firemouth. Because it's quite a bit smaller than glory. I'm gonna grow it out a bit and see if they'll get along.

Anyways.

Let me know if the video doesn't work.

I was 100% sure it was a male at the LFS, it was holding its own against a pretty big managuense cichlid a bunch of jack dempseys, and there were 2 that I was 100% sure were female, orange bellies and all, and the same size, but then when I took a closer look when I took it home with me it seems like it has a little bit of blue glint in the fins, and the fins aren't as long as they seem to be on other males, but it's also only like an inch and a half long. but I'm not sure about the orange belly. Then again, glory didn't have an orange belly at first either.

thanks much

I'm afraid, his dorsals blend in with the dark background..... His attitude appears to be male though....

If you do buy another will you be removing the other fish? If they pair and breed then they will be the target of a hell of a lot of aggression.

They're gonna have their own tank. This guy is just in my 37 gallon for now since glory is nearly twice its size and I'm worried things would not bode well. Glory's just seemed kinda bored recently.

Given her current small tank foot print, and the fact I can't keep anything with her without it getting pestered to death or murdered, I figured why not get a 30"x13"x10" and a mate to keep her occupied somehow.

IME the females have never been any less aggressive than the males  I'm just trying to make sure I'm not trying to throw two females together, especially since my current female is quite the aggressor.

I'll try to get a better shot of it against the sand for contrast. Right now it's got a chip in the dorsal fin (probably from the managuense cichlid or one of the JD's, all of which were twice if not 3 times the size of all the convicts) but it seems pretty long.

I agree, but I'm not talking about aggression here..... It is the body language in general.....

male definitely

females are more orange anyway.

he seems like a male from his attitude i guess.

ludwig- you have cons in a pond ? *envious*

Yep defo a male, looks exactly like mine.

He's a lot less aggressive than the female, even less aggressive than the firemouth, but it's probably do to his smaller size. He's even been sharing the food pellets with the khuli loaches rather than scaring them off or nipping at them, and he doesn't pay any mind to the tetras. I'll have to agree he's male now, though.

He'll be moving out of that tank soon enough.

I'll be getting a 20 gallon long, one of those 30"x13"x12" ones. Right now the female is a bit larger than the male. I'd say around half an inch longer, give or take. Would they be okay in said tank together, or should I wait until he grows to her size?

I think they should be ok, as long as they pair up.
Your female does sound like a bit of a bully but I dont think it'll matter, my female is bigger than my male and their a perfect couple
