As I`m upgrading to a bigger tank I`d like to add a few more fish when the time is right but I`'m really undecided between Galaxy Rasbora and Lemon Tetras

I already have long finned Danios, Harlequins, and rummys so would the Rasboras be different enough to be 'noticeable' and would their size be ok with my other fish?
I like the Lemon tetras but I`m not sure how they`d get on with the GBR`s and Apistos I have as well.

I would just like to add something peaceful but different and with a bit of colour if at all possible. :look:

All thoughts would be really appreciated please :)

how big is the tank? Celestial Danios (galaxy rasborra) are going to get lost in a large tank unless in big numbers.

My thoughts are that it's 4 shoals in the tank... unless it's a very big tank then they're very small shoals. Shoaling fish look best in groups of 10 or more... Having kept them in groups ranging from 3 - 15 I'd always go for one large group of a single shoaler... and only branch out into other species if I had room for 10 or more of each species. (Though having said that's I'd only have a max of 2 species of mid-top water shoalers.

As ZoddyZod said, the galaxys will easily be lost in a large tank and especially amongst other dithers. So my vote would probably go for lemon tetras.
But my overall vote would probably go for just upping the numbers of what you've already got. Or switching them out for something different.

What size are you upgrading to and what're the current stocking? (Just to note I'm aware you mentioned it in the OP but there aren't any numbers in there :))

I have just got a school of lemon tetras and they are great dont worry about them with your little cichlids mine are in with much bigger cichlids and are being totally ignored :) If anything it will help with their aggression and confidence as in rivers in the wild cichlids will look to schooling fish to make sure that the area is safe.

I currently have in my 180ltr tank:

8 Rummy nose tetras
5 harlequins
3 swordtails (small)
2 small mollies
6 or 7 long finned danios
1 lonely minnow.

Also 4 small GBR`s, (2 male and 2 female)
5 small Apistos (1 male and 4 females) but will be looking to take 2 or 3 of the females back to lfs when the male decides which he`s going to pair with (or sooner if I have to)

The new tank is approx 350/360ltr.

The swordtails are growing babies from the original stocking I had when I first joined the forum, same with the mollies. My tank was in a right state back then with lots of my fish dying, the swordtails and mollies are what have survived.

The x-ray tetras are too transparent for my liking to be honest Carl, I`d like something that puts a bit of colour into the tank.

Thanks Wills, I`m leaning more towards the Lemon Tetras but I`m just not sure enough yet

I'd personally stick with what you've got and up the numbers. More of less is better than vice versa. Don't be a victim of "fish-collectivitus"

"fish-collectivitus" ? I`m sure I have no idea what you mean!!! :hyper:

I forgot to say I have 2 neons left from the 6 I used to have, maybe I should up them to 6 or 8 again? At least that way I`ll have some more colour then

fish-collectivitus-syndrome as i like to call it. No its not a technically real and recognised condition. Its more of a spoof i came up with about having a "i see, i like, i buy" sort of attitude to fish keeping. Whereby after a month or two you sit and look at your tank and realise you just have a mass jumble of fish with no real togetherness about them. If you catch my drift.

To summarise as i said earlier. Higher numbers of fewer species is better than a few of lots of species of fish.

Hmm, I definitely agree with Verminator. In a 300l tank I would expect to see the largest fish reach wayyyy larger than 6cm... Although your swords will probably get quite big if they're captive bred/ornamental stock rather than wild type... I've just always thought of them as too skittish for centerpiece fish.

To be honest, although you have plenty of different shapes of fish... alot of them grow to roughly the same size meaning you really don't have anything eye catching/centerpiece like. Each to there own, so please don't take it personally! But I doubt I would enjoy watching your tank as there would be too much going on for my personal tastes.

Without removing any fish (so only adding, lol) I would make it look more like....
10 Rummy nose tetras
10 harlequins
3 swordtails
10 long finned danios (and I would imagine the minnow shoals with these guys?)
10 neons
4 GBRs
3 Apistos (1m 2f)
Then add a male female pair of something such a opaline gouramis, gold gouramis, moonlight gouramis, pearl gouramis etc. Although if you went for pearls I'd be tempted to do 1m 2f.

I mean obviously if it were my tank I'd have 2 shoals, a few big fish and then a couple/large group of bottom dwellers... but it isn't. So working with what it sounds like you like... hopefully I've given you some ideas you might like. :)

Thanks Curiosity :)

I guess I just considered the GBR`s as my 'centrepiece' fish because they`re 'different' to most of the others, what with the others being shoaling fish. But I get your point about same sizes etc and agree.

I had a couple of dwarf gouramis a while back when I first started keeping fish and have to say that they`re not really my cup of tea to be honest.

I do think the most sensible option would be to up the numbers of what I already have, at least that way I know that those species are likely to last as my current ones have done well since sorting the water quality.

IF it`a a viable option then I`m open to the idea on 'bigger fish', I just never thought the tank would take something bigger or more than 6 of one kind.
You live and learn huh B-)

I genuinely wouldn't compare dwarf gouramis to pearl, moonlights, opaline etc. Check them out on youtube maybe?

Yup, definitely live and learn with fishkeeping, that's one of the best things :)
Also just a note, think how many neons naturally live together in the wild and such... they live in groups of 100's... lol. I think there are even videos on youtube if you search for wild neons.

Same goes for alot of other shoaling fish.

Also if you weren't too bothered about colour then I'd definitely suggest keyhole cichlids. And I'd definitely have suggested rainbow cichlids or something but with your current stocking they're not really do-able.

Edit: Oh and just an idea... if you're ever interested in a new fish but don't know how it acts/moves it's not a bad idea to check you tube to see what you can find :)

Have you concidered Golden Dwarf Acara as a centre piece?

I`ll definitely have a look on youtube, never gave it a thought. I haven`t given any thought to the possibility of any bigger fish to be honest as I didn`t think I`d have room and wasn`t sure how my others would be.
I don`t want anything that will grow too big although hubby wouldn`t mind, he likes the bigger fish

I`ve just googled for golden dwarf acara but can`t actually find anything.......probably just me but all I can find are jewels and blues :look:

What do you class as bigger though? The 'general' layout of a balanced tank is a couple of larger centerpiece fish surrounded by dithers (mid water shoalers) and bottom feeders.
The larger fish we've suggested are only 10-12cm ish... that's not really very big... especially in a 350l tank. Do you have the tank yet? Perhaps you're not picturing how big it'll be..?
