Going to be needing another filter to partner an Eheim 2217 on my new 5x2x2. I'd like to use two 2217's but don't think it'll be up to the job.

The FX5 is the obvious choice (spec-wise). It's just that I have read all sorts of good and bad stories about them on the www.

What are you own personal experiences of using them ? The main factors for me are noise and reliability.

I am not at all bothered with easy priming or ease of maintenance (as I am used to the Eheim classic series !).

Come on guys. Lets hear it .........

i have my fx5 running about 1 meter from my bed and its not noisy at all it makes less nois infact than the 3 plus i have on a smaller tank

Ok well they will tick your boxes, had mine about three years and its just great, noise what noise :shifty: silent, gonna say it, soooo easy to maintain, comes with a dvd which guides you through the whole set up and maintainence, :good:

If you asked me to rate it from one to ten, i would rate it as a 9.....10 i think is impossible to obtain  thats like having a river to filter for you, and not many have this great opportunity, mind i have seen a tropical fish farm using the local river as a run off system, amazing  opps derailment

I'll let you know my opinion once mine gets wet, but I must say I've never read anything bad about them. I watched the DVD that comes with it on Youtube ages ago, and it seems a very simple filter to use, and would definitely be up to the job you want it for.

I'm hoping one is going to be enough on my new tank, though may need some extra filtration as my cichlids get bigger.

got mine used never has any problems with it apart from the purge valve thingy snapping and causing a leak all over the floor.

Thanks guys. I think the decision is pretty much made for me. THere is nothing else that comes close anywhere near the same size, flow rate or price.

Well except for this ..... http://www.allpondsolutions.co.uk/aquarium-external-filter-2000-l-h-9w-uv-1216-0.html .... and I have not been able to find a single review or opinion about it at all. I suspect it could be very poor quality at that price.

I'd still go for the Fluval, a reputable make and that you can find out lots about :good:

That filter in the link from all pond solutions, I have one its absolutely brilliant I am so impressed with it I am hoping to change all my filters over to them, its quiet, easy to maintain, the added bonus of the uv light too. The spray bar is really quite powerful and they have an added skimmer (which I dont use on mine). Money wise you can get 2 of these for the price of an FX5, parts are cheeper too if you need to replace impellars or anything the FX5 is really pricy. The only downfall is the instruction leaflet is really very basic, but if I can put it together then anyone can  Its basically a tetratec copy without the price tag. Very good filter if you dont want a "named brand"

Hmmm THanks Star. That certainly puts the cat amongst the pigeons ! It may all be academic though as I think they are out of stock at the moment.

Trust me to cause problems  sent you a pm to where you can get one :good:

getting a 2nd external was the easy way out, if u were truly passionate u would have researched sumps

I'm nervous of sumps, never having used one. I wish I knew someone close by who ran one on a home tank, so I could have a good look over it. My vague impression was that sumps were generally a bit noisier than externals. Am I misinformed ?

I'd still be open about getting a sump system. I need my confidence boosted first though !

This is also my thoughts...I would love a sump, but worried if i do something wrong it would cause a major leak, Now that would annoy the folk in the flat below me,lol.

Hamfist, i do know a fish keeper in southampton who has a few large 300g tanks, he has sumps on his tanks...I have'nt spoken with him for a couple of month's after he had a crash, but i shall text him and see if he can't arrange a to meet you, But not promising nothing, just a wee thought.

Another idea is go down to your local fish shops, i found that one of my shops was running quite a few sumps on there tanks, have a butchers that way.
