Fx5 - The Truth - Let's Hear It !

That's kind of you to offer to contact your friend, Nelly.

However, I have just spent the last couple of hours researching every filtration option under the sun, and I just think that the whole sump system thing is just a bit more complex than what I'm wanting. I also have to consider simplicity and the ability to be able to leave my wife in charge of the tank for days/weeks. I think I could probably set up a sump, and manage it, but my wife would just be overawed by the whole thing.
It's going to be externals for me I think, for simplicity. I am strongly attracted to the Allpondsolutions ones, with Star4's glowing report of hers. I think I'm probably going to try one 2000l/hr and one 1400l/hr one. That still gives a turnover rate of almost 7x per hour, which I think is good enough. I also need to consider running costs as these big filters are not cheap at all to run, and are obviously running 24 hrs a day.The big Allpondsolutions one is literally half the price of an FX5 and is worth a shot. Even if it only lasts half as long, I won't have lost anything.

Well, anyway, that's my thoughts as of 15.02 on sunday 6th June. Who knows what I'll be thinking tomorrow !!

Ah yes that filter i understand is very good, and at that price go for it, i brought my fx5, then discovered that one after.obviously thought nothing more about it, there are quite a few people on this forum with this filter, unknown wether to not these folk are still active.

Maybe worth asking in the tropical discussion section about these filters, I am sure there are quite a few that do use them now. Many die hard FX5 fans will tell you that the fx5 is better, then the Ehiem lovers will say they are best lol. I have aquapro 4's on other tanks and yes they are good, but I am eventually swapping to the 2000l sunsun one thats how much I rate them, but I have never had an FX5.

I'm nervous of sumps, never having used one. I wish I knew someone close by who ran one on a home tank, so I could have a good look over it. My vague impression was that sumps were generally a bit noisier than externals. Am I misinformed ?

I'd still be open about getting a sump system. I need my confidence boosted first though !
no idea. i dont have a tank larger than 4ft so never looked into them either. it was tongue in cheek =)

I've had a thread up in the Hardware section all day, with zero responses. not too much throughput in that particular sub-forum I'd guess.

I'll stick up a thread in in the main tropical discussion forum and see if there's any takers !!
