Fry Sucked Up...

I was giving my cory fry tank a clean today,when i noticed 2 of the pygmy fry had been sucked into the filter
Thankfully they were alive,any ideas how i can stop the fry getting sucked into the very small slits on top of the box filter?,here's a pic


The tri fry are fine has they are alot bigger than these wee pygmy fry,thankfully theres no propeller to harm them once they're in there,but i don't want to keep pulling it apart everyday
i thought of a stocking but i don't want to reduce the flow to much.

pair of tights over the box? That might work bubbles should still come out i think, not sure

maybe if you take off the air line then pull tights over it. cut out a hole for the tubing to go in but fix it with an elastic band so they cant swim in it (if that makes sense) then put the piping back on.

Thanks,i know what you mean i use to do this on the livebearer fry tank,but found i needed to take it off everyday has it kept blocking up

hmm other DIY sponge filters i've seen are usually just sponge with the bit of pipe in with the airline in it maybe that would work best, they wont get stuck in sponge, will they?

Hi Harlequins

Try pulling the filter up to the top of the tank. You might be able to fasten it there with a clothes pin or hold it up by pushing the tank lid against the airline. Since the little fry tend to stay at the bottom, they won't be as likely to get caught in it. However, if the fry are tiny and you are still doing big, daily water changes, they probably don't even need the filter in there yet. While you are removing the growth hormone they put in the water, you will be removing the small amount of ammonia they produce as well.
