Fry Sucked Into Thejewul Filter

New here - but have lots of questions if anyone can help.

I have recently changed my fish into a Juwel lido 120 smaller tank, from a bigger tank. New one has an internal canister filter and have just found 10 dead fry in the filter today. The fry have been sucked into the filter. My old tank had a large external filter and the tube from it went into the tank and at the bottom of the tube was the inlet pipe. When fry appeared, I just wrapped a bit of mesh stocking around it for a few weeks until the fry were bigger, but I just don't know what to do to avoid them being sucked into this filter. It is like a box in the corner of the filter and there are inlets all over it. I cannot think of anything that I can cover them with as there is nowhere to tie it onto. Any ideas??
The inlets are like grid lines about 4 inches long and 16th of an inch wide each hole, so that would not work. It has to be something that allows the filter to work while protecting the fry.
Stocking mesh over the inlet pipe worked great for a few weeks while the fry were tiny with my old set up.
ANYONE got a solution - apart from a breeding trap as I dont want to stress mummy fish by putting her in there???
Should I change to an external filter, where I could put a bit of mesh over the inlet pipe and is it possible to remove the Jewul filter from the tank? It looks like a fixture.it is like a big vertical box fixed in the corner of the tank.

There's nothing stopping you from removing the internal and using an external instead: the internal is just siliconed on so it can be removed with a sharp knife slipped in between the class and the filter casing.

If you were to leave it in, you could superglue sections of material over the inlets. However, they would be a permanent fixture, rather than a removable one, and you would have to completely drain the tank to get to the bottom ones, as you'd have to apply the superglue out of water...

It's up to you... it does sound like an external would be the more sensible option doesn't it?

i cant see your photo but it sound like you may need to get a different filter. but i would go to your Local fish shop and ask them first if they have any ideas. or you can get a small tank just for the fry to go in until they are big enough to go into the big tank. other than that i would keep using the mesh. wait i have heard of this box thing that can go round filter to protect the fish.

If you build up a few more layers of sponge in the top of the filter that might stop them being sucked into the top section. No ideas for the bottom though! My juwel internal is hope to about 20 merry cherry shrimp, there's no stopping them getting in.
