i had a thought a few days ago.

my new tank has come and people are telling me to buy a stronger pump ie more LPH

the one that comes with it is 600lph and people are telling me to upgrade to a 1000lph.

if anyone is planning on doing this DONT do it.

why you ask, well for water to be filtered properly it has to spend some time in contact with the bacteria, so using a faster pump thus decreases water contact time. so using a slower pump, will infact give you better filtration, so i recomend going slower rather than faster, i might 'down-grade' to a 400 purely because of this, so i get better filtration.

if you are worried about flow, buy a power head and stick it in the tank that way you can increase flow with out Decreasing filtration.

where as you would if you bought a faster pump to fit the juwel internal.

thoughts welcomed

:)

Dont see any problem with my juwel internal and flow rate, bacteria conversion etc, if you wanted more filtration on a juwel, just get an external and remove the internal if you wanted. The only problem would come from serious overstocking or large fish who produce a lot of waste.

yeh i dont want to go down the external route just yet,

just telling people if there planning on upgrading there pump theres no point. as it will make things worse

quite right!!! junk the juwel item and get a proper filter. internal or external, it matters little. just about anything else would be better, much better!!!

hi ive got a jewel rekord with internal filter , no probs with it really , but what i cant understand when i bought this tank it had the usual blue sponges the nitrate sponge , the carbon one and white filter, when i went to get replacement charcoal one , they refused to sell me one as i had live plants in my tank, ive had the tank for nearly twelve months no probs with my plants, if they werent supposed to have them with live plants why do they supply them with the tank

in a plated tank the carbon sponge and nitrate sponge arent needed, so theres no point really, i have no problems, its just a heads up for people thinking of upgrading to a better pump.

so ill be okay with normal sponges now, thats good news, tks

haha bad experience with the juwel internal bobo?

not with the filter itself, but everything else from juwel has let me down. tank Rio 180, split. heater x2 stuck on. light ibar failed. though my neighbour went through two 600 heads, before jumping ship for Fluavl

the problem with the filter, imo, is its crap! the heads are known to be short lived, well some. as stated it draws the water through the filter too fast for, best, bio effectivness. it is stuck to the tank making it very difficult to clean the case properly. honestly, can you see one reason to have one? apart from anything else, it is nowhere near 2x turnover(in real not advertised terms), never mind 5 in a 180 tank. Really, i cant think of a single filter i would not prefer to have, even ReSun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i've no problems what so ever with my juwel tanks and the rekord 60 came without the internal filter so i got a second hand one from a rekord 70 and put it in there
i run 2 filters on a lot of my tanks only incase one breaks down i'm not stuck without any filtering

both my juwel tanks were secondhand and have been perfect so far

IMO the internal juwel built in filters are pretty good , easy to clean and reliable - the head in my rio is still the original one the man i got the tank off had with it so its comming up 3 years old now - i just make sure i clean the powerhead once a fortnight to make sure nothing gets built up inside it - as i do any pump thats in my tanks

With the Juwel internal there are 2 points of water entry into the rising tube. The upper one draws quicker and through the coarse media and mechanical filter media while the lower one draws much more slowly through the finer media to allow maximum contact with the bacteria.

As previously suggested speeding up this flow changes the property of the filter.

When I tested my Juwel 600 pump without a filter it was pumping about the 600lpm I assume reading this that once the pump is under load with the media it will be at a lower rate but is this normal?

Also I don't remember which sponge is designed for nitrate (as suggested abobe) in fact not including floss and carbon are the bacteria really all that fussy about the sponges or their order in the filter?

the carbon and nitrate sponges should be there, but are not needed in a planted tank as the nitrate sponge would remove the nitrate (plant food)

carbon is no good when using meds.

bacteria will grow on anything but a sponge is better because of the surface area.

my juwel filter in my rekord 96 has never had any faults and works wonders in keeping my tank clean with my convicts

in my planted tank i dont use the nitrate sponges and only use carbon sponges when i want to get rid of meds
