Foggy Water

Super coley I'm not JonnyUk... Just pointing out that you can't just go presuming stuff in this fish keeping lark. :) Leads you into trouble.

I really think you should wander out of the planted section every now n then... Not every person who isn't a plant expert is either slightly braindead or incapable of understanding the basics of plants growth.

lol. I know. Time is of the essence though. I only ever go in the planted and hardware/DIY sections. No time for anything else. I am on 4 planted forums (1 as a mod) and 2 other general fish sites. The latter 2 I only go in the planted and DIY sections.

Then I have website with loads of updates to do. I am well behind.

Add to that in the other 90% of the day I have 2 kids and a dog to give attention to and lots of jobs to do (hence the amount of DIY content on my sites and the interest in the DIY hardware section)

Sorry that I seem to think people are braindead. Maybe that is the impreesion given because most threads I just let them run. Its only ones where I feel that advice is not going to well that I post. Therefore it may well seem that every post of mine is a bit negative etc. However I don't have the time available for posting in every thread etc. If it came to that I would have to limit which sites I went on because the kids, Dog and just maybe other sites would take priority.

Anyway see my post above. I accept I generalise too much and also accepted I was wrong. I have no problem with being wrong nor admitting it. I regularly am wrong and regularly do apologise. Many others see they are wrong and disappear.

I'm not having a go! I was actually just trying to make it clear that all I was trying to do was show you shouldn't generalise.

And when I said you should stray out of the planted section, that was more of an off the cuff joke. Mainly alluding to the fact that you seem to have a limited view of the 'general' member base here, or the problems that often crop up etc.

I'm in no way suggesting fish forum comes before life lol.

Dont agree I'm afriad.
And understanding a lot of what we cover in the planted section does interlink with other problems that you may find outside the planted section.

I shouldn't I agree, but I do and it is a bad habit that won't go away. Something I can try to work on but the 'force of habit' is something we all have with some aspect of our personality. I wouldn't hold your breath that I'll be 'cured' anytime soon :)

That is half the problem. When I first came to this site I was not planted. I just bought a tank and it had some sick fish. So what did I do? Not post straight away. I searched. not only this site. I looked through several links on google and decided that this looked like the best place for info. Then I searched in here too. Then I read the pins. then I posted.

Doesn't happen any more. People google, find the forum and bang post and gone. I don't have the patience for these guys. I think you can tell. I see 'new to plants, tell me what to do' and scroll past unless I'm really bored. If I see 'sand or gravel' I clikc to another forum before I kick the TV screen in. You get what I mean.

I am only 4½ years into this hobby. 2 noths less than that into planted but I know what I know from research and I have tanks that run theirselves from sheer research, multitudes of reading and a ton of effort.. I am often a manic reader, searching and reading and analising and trying to sort the good from the bad. That is what has given me the 'knowledge'. Some of that knowledge may be wrong and I am corrected which is good for me because I want to know. I dare say I know more than some 'experts' purely because I am never satisfied that I know enough where some 'experts' get to a level where they know what they want to and stop. Problem there? Same as technology. They are the myth tellers of the future as they don't fins out new research and then batter people like me with 'I've been doing this for 20 years'. So what I've been doing it much less but I have learnt more in that time and will continue to do so :)

So please forgive me for sometimes being a little heavy handed but I do expect newbies to do some research. Not the amount I do because maybe they aren't as interested as me in learning more and more. I am like Jonny No5......Need more data.

So they don't need to trawl through pages and pages but if they post before reading and researching (just a little) just because their facebook or texting or whatever things are 'more important' than their 'urgent problem' tat they post on then they either get ignored or they get some straight to the point, no beating about the bush and yes generalisations.

I know you're not having a go. I'm not having a go back. Just trying to let you see where I am coming from. I do generalise. I am opinionated. It isn't going to change because thats me. However I am a lovely person in reality :) Very patient, Very caring. Maybe the PC changes me :) or maybe it is the difference between reading text and hearing it with the tone of voice intended. I am not a monster really even if sometimes I sound it. You can tell how much of a rush I am in from all the typos. Even now I am typing away, then onto another forum and another. Then back to tanking my bathroom walls. Then maybe I'll sleep sometime today :)

In summary. ...yes I expect people to research. Not to a huge extent but at least read pins (thats why they are pinned) and at least see if another thread answers the question. After all a 10 minute search is likely to yield the answer muhch quicker than waiting for a reply to a new thread :)

My go I'm ranting again. Another bad habit I have

i kinda see where you are comning from with the newbie part of thread/researching before posting. i'm a member of car forum and the number of new users who just post a question and wait for people to tell them the answers is very high. sometimes they ask the same question that was answered 5 topics down the list, can get on your pip abit but then i think, i'm a long term member and 5 mins of my time to post a quick reply is nothing (granted i do this at work, at home my computer is rarely on)

i'm very new to this, despite alot of reading i'm still non the wiser really. i think i now kinda understand whats going on in my tank and its all due to this topic, why? Becuase its specific to my problem/needs and addresses them.

i would like to thank everyone for their input, its very appreciated and helped me no end. my tank is now looking great (although i do have substrate particules sitting on my bog wood and leaves etc and no amount of vacing seems to fix it. i clean the second filter every night but i think i need a bigger second filter for the filter floss. my second filter is very small and i don't think its doing much.

the test kit i used was a friends because i just have not had chance to get my own. have done today though, he did say the test kit was a little old.

on a side note think i'm gonna have to take some fish in, my brother is over stocked and has a sky high ammonia level /was six now down to 2.5 with water changes for the last 2 days (my little knoweledge helped here).

thanks again

no probs ;) I agree 5 mins is not a lot. But that 5 mins should be the 'newbie's' time not mine wherever possible.

Like you said I came in here 3 days a go and basicaly (not exaggerration) 5 of the top 6 threads were identical in their title. If I notice that when I enter then the newbie should do. Needless to say I clicked straight onto the next forum :)

I'm glas this thread has helped you and I'm not really talking about you. 'Foggy water' is a little different to others where the details are already pinned or have been answered 10 times already in the day in other threads ;)

Good to hear you have leaarned something from the posts too. It is often better to have conflicting views within thread as there are no definitive answers plus you can watch the tank see what is happening and already have 2 possible courses of action ready ;)

Good luck

thought i'd give a quick update. my tank is now settled and looking good. some of the big plants at the back on the left need to go but i'll wait until the tank is more mature. in the end i drained all my water out and put it in a plastic box, i also took my filter out and heater, these went in the plastic box along with the fish.

i then took out all the plants from the tank, washed them and trimmed them etc.

out came the gravel and fert substrate. i rinsed the gravel and put to one side, also cleaned the tank. i bought new fert substrate and lay this in the tank, i then planted my plants. lay gravel down and then filled up. i used an up turned pan lid (worked a charm). added the filter etc and stuck the fish in (also took the chance to do a 50% water change). after finishing and within 10 minutes my water was crystal clear, not looked back. really happy with the results. fish are happy as larry :)

would like to thank everyone for there help, i got there in the end!
