Fluval Plus 4?

Just got a 2nd hand tank and it has a Fluval Plus 4 which is fully submersable...

Are they any good and do I need to have it sitting up high to penetrate the water surface? Another thing is I put some carbon and wool in between the sponges, is this ok as well?

I have several of the Fluval plus filters and they are good units.

Forget the floss in the middle as you'll be chnging that rapidly as it will clog up fast. It's up to you if you run carbon in it or not but I only run carbon to remove meds so just run foam sponges in mine.

To get surface movement you will need it up the top of the tank, yes.

Good filters imo and from my experience they're better than the U series they've been replaced with

I just tried it with the little bit of air tube out of the water's surface to create the bubble effect but oh my gosh it's loud!

Take that bit off then- you don't need it. The water flow can be quite loud if you don't have the filter submerged enough- which is annoying because some bright spark made it so big it barely fits in a 15" high tank. But it is very good.

I found that the fluval internals block up quite a lot, what size is the tank, to be honest i took out all my internals and replaced with fluval external 305's, and difference is unbelievable, that one move ill never regret ever, even the 25 gal tank has one one it.
So try it but if you can afford one about £50 quid new, prob £20 second hand and worth every penny, ive cant remember when i last cleaned the out, i used to do it monthly and to be honest i was wasteing my time so now i do it whenever. As my tank has algae i decided to add a packet of nitrazorb and its that easy, they make like so simple.
