Hey guys!!

I'm new to fish and would like some help, I'm going to go and get the Fluval edge 23ltr on monday, i think it is really nice looking tank and I'm pretty excited to get it..

i have a couple of questions..

1. what live plants do you recommend to get?
2. where can i get driftwood?
3. what fish?

I've been looking at some endler guppies and think they are really cool!! so i was thinking maybe first getting 4 or 5 to start off with then introducing 4 or 5 neon tetras..? maybe 1 bumblebee ninja shrimp is this an okay thing to do?? like i said I'm new to fish so would really appriciate your advice!

( i can't stop watching this guys video as his tank is so smart.. i really wanna get mines close to his!!) .. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzOJjmXjeH8

Thanks in advance!!

carlito :fun:

Awesome tank, really cool look to it!

1) I would recommend hardy plants which don't require extra CO2 or strong lighting, as i'm not sure how good the lights in the edge would be. Vallis and Java moss spring to mind, although you have to tie Java Moss to porous rocks or wood, which you might not like.

2) You can get driftwood from most Fish stores, just make sure to soak it overnight so it doesn't leach tannins into the water.

3) Good fish would be:

A Betta (with some other species possibly). Stunning colours, although not great with guppys or endlers as they may mistake them for rival males. Oh yeah, and don't put another male Betta with it. It will cause carnage!!!

Guppies- great variety of colours and easy to breed

Endlers Livebearers- Similiar to Guppies but hardier (Have not been inbred so much I believe, which accounts for their extra toughness)

Platies

A small shoal of one of the tetra species (Neons, Black Neons, Glowlights, Black Phantoms)

Some oto catfish

Loads more options, but these would all be good

Check out www.AqaAdvisor.com to work out good numbers for your tank size.

Do you know about cycling etc? Check out the beginner pages on the 'your new tropical tank' section if not.

Sorry, but I can only answer one of your questions. I think that 5 neon tetras and 4-5 guppies would be great. OR, get about 8 neon tetras. No more than that. What about a snail? Jk, I don't know what I'm thinking. :p

Having had an Edge, I can offer some advice.
While they are lovely looking tanks, they are tricky to keep clean because of the small opening at the top.
You have to be a bit of a contortionist to be able to clean all the glass, & getting into the corners with a syphon is almost impossible
You're also very limited as to what you can have in it.
By the time you've added your substrate, wood, plants etc, you've lost quite a bit of volume
I had a Betta, 3 endlers & some shrimp in mine, I soon bought a bigger tank.
The lighting in the original is poor, but I think they now come with Led's.
It has to be absolutely level or you get bubbles at the top.
The lid also gets a lot of condensation, & if you don't wipe it a couple of times a day it will rust
Imo, for the money, you could get a more conventional shaped tank.
Some of the open topped ones can look very good, & you can have a better selection of fish

Thanks for your advice!
Sam that link was good to check out! and the differnet fish you suggested was good!

Cazgar its good to get some advice from someone who's had one.. i think my hearts set on the edge to be honest! i really love it. - was your betta okay with having the water full to the top, i heard these tanks weren't good for bettas,, i really want one as they are pretty cool!!

one other question.. is an endler guppie and endler livebearer the same thing??

i really can't wait to get my tank up and running.. hopefully get it looking great and i will post some pics!! :D

Ok....

With the best will in the world (and please bear in mind that I've had a few beers while watching the snooker, so I may not have my most diplomatic head on  ) , you've been given some pretty poor advice so far...

First of all; if this is your first foray into fishkeeping, please reconsider your choice of tank. The Edge does look smart, I have one myself (well, it's really my son's, but I maintain it, as he's scared of syphoning up his shrimp!), but I would, never, ever even suggest it for newbies. The filtration is minimal, the volume is poor, so you're very limited in stocking (to the person who said 'ten fish', that's waaay too many; five or six is the absolute maximum) and the small opening means maintaining the tank is very difficult.

Endler's are a nice fish for the Edge (my son has six males, plus two amano shrimp in his), but that is the limit of your stocking. There is no way you're going to be able to put neons in there as well. Otocinclus are a very delicate fish, that even experienced fishkeepers, with well planted, mature tanks struggle to keep; they are, in no way, shape or form, suitable for an Edge.

They very first thing I'd suggest is looking at a different tank. I recently treated myself to one of the new AquaNano 40s; a much, much better choice, IMO, so you might want to look at something along those lines.

Then, you need to go and read the article on 'the nitrogen cycle' in the beginner's resource centre (the link is in my sig) so you understand the chemistry involved in cycling a tank.

If your still about, I'll post in more detail later (once the snooker's over :p )

aww emo kid... hope them beers are good!! haha!! i was thinking about how many fish can i really have in their.. maybe the best thing for me would be to get 6 or 7 endlers and some shrimp too!! i just get excited and want more fish but I've got to tell myself no carlito!! haha ill check out the aqua nano 40s but i really can't see me not getting the edge :fun:

do you by any chance have a pic of your/sons edge...

i really appricaiate the help/advice!!

:hey:

To have a Betta in it, you can't fill it to the top, I used to leave about an inch gap.
True male endlers are a lot smaller than guppies.
OldMan on the livebearer forum is the best to ask about endlers

Sorry for my poor advice ;)

I didn't know much about the tank, but had heard good things about it before. I have never kept Otos, so didn't know they were sensitive, it's just they are small and so leapt to mind! I personally would get atleast a 15 gallon tbh, but not everyone has the space.

7 endlers & a Betta Imo would be overstocking.
You are limited in the Edge, so it would be either a Betta & 3/4 endlers, or just 5/6 endlers or neons & some shrimp

Btw, don't know if you're in the Uk, but Dobbies have the Edge on offer for £69.99 if you're determined to have one it's not a bad saving

Hate to say I just shut down my Edge and moved the fish into another tank. The hassle of maintaining relative to the tank size wasn't worth it to me. If you do decide to get one, remember the small opening will make using a net a mission. I spent around half an hour trying to rotate my arm 360 degrees while 8 pygmy Cory's sat there, just out of reach, watching my efforts with interest : /

Oh, they were, but for some odd reason, I don't feel so good today; got a bit of a headache

Well, if you've got your heart set on the Edge, just bear in mind the limitations. The Edge is more focused on the tank than the fish, tbh.

Don't forget, that whatever tank you choose, you'll need to cycle it. We always recommend fishless cycles, but you could do fish-in; you'll need test kits for ammonia and nitrite, whichever method you decide to go with, and be prepared for a lot (probably daily) water changes if you go with fish-in. If you do decide to cycle fish-in, then you won't want to add all the Endlers at once; you'd want only two or three, max, or the ammonia will build up too quickly.

Sure; here it is;
Edge.jpg

We really struggle with plants in it, but it is one of the older ones with the halogen spotlights; the new one with the LEDs might be better for plants.

I would like to add about the plants if you are getting the edge with the led lights plants will grow extremely well I have to prune mine down every other day I inject co2 at 10ppm and add tetra plantamin every week, here have a look at a photo of it

My stocking is quite high but never have problems with nitrite ammonia Ect so the filter is extremely reliable.
