Can I switch out the pipes/hoses on my 204? I'd like to just put on smooth tubing as it seems the corrugated hose that came with it catches all the sludge and makes it more difficult to clean. Plus, I have my inline heater rigged up that's less than satisfactory. I'm most concerned about the connections closest to the filter. Thanks for any help.

Yes you can. I used to run a 305 (think the valve is the same) with green eheim piping and it worked well.

If its the same as my 305 yeah you can switch to a proper pvc tubing. See if you can take a sample from your LFS to take and try. As long as the screw nuts come up over the outside of the pipe and then tighten against the barb then it's a good size.

People use 5/8 transparent tubing with these filters (assuming the fitting diameter of your filter is the same as 406)

This diameter also works with inline heater and inline CO2 diffuser. To ensure watertight connection use hose clamps on all connections (http://www.amazon.com/b?ie=UTF8&node=256338011)

Thanks for all your suggestions. My biggest concern is with the fittings right at the filter. I guess I can't use the quick-connect fittings that are there now, but I imagine I can just fit the line over the inlet, and when I screw tight the fitting it should work. And yes, I use hose clamps for all my fittings (except the one right at the filter).
