Buying fish like flower horn, blood parrot, or fancy goldfish is rewarding the people who have "created" these fish and then add a little bit of superstition as well into their case especially of FH... the fish are not at fault here its again the humans and their greed which is saddening as usual...

I try not to judge a fish by the mistakes of people.

thats a good point...

its not the fish's fault.. why punish it?

but yea the flowerhorns around here dont have bumps on their heads.. none whatsoever... theyre mutts i guess, but still cool.

Leck a couple of things, first off there is always the possibility that the FH in the store are female hence the lack of the humps. secondly there are a couple of things to do with the hump itself, first off it is based on a couple of things, sexual maturity, diet( they need a good staple cichlid pellet, and not feeders just not the nutrional needs there.) and the last thing that it is based on is genetics, if the genes are there for a large hump then more than likely its progeny will have large humps but again that means that both the female and male will need to have come from a line that contains that gene.

all male FH will have a hump, the question is the size, the higest grade FH will have the large hump and best color while the lower grade ones won't have as large a hump and poor color. now if you want to get one with out the hump going to have to go with a female but be warned many people have noticed that a FH will mate with a midas or trimac and that will make mutts that are even worse than an already low grade FH.

i love all hybrids, its not their fault theyre like that so why blame them? theyre actually quite normal fish around here.

like the one in my avatar?

BTW do you think they are smart because they have oversized noggins ? haha :D
No it just means they have down syndrome. :p Anyway I don't like them, but not as much as I hate blood parrots (in my opinion the ugliest fish in existence). In short, I just don't like hybrids. (I have nothing against them personally, I just think they are ugly).

they cant really be normal for where you are cause they're man made. the one in your av looks kickass though,
i still wouldnt by one for the fact that people are paying a lot of money for such fish. This encourages people to continue to hybridise and leads them to believe that (at least some people) if you make hybrids they will be attractive possessing only the positive attributes of the fishes in question, which obviously isn't true.

One more thing releasing them in the wild is absolutley horrible! Even releasing the nth generation of a captive kept local species can cause a reduction in the genetic fitness of the fish in the area. imagine if some hybrids with unknown traits started to cross. :-(
