Fitghing Fish

What a revolting topic, totally agree with ALL that Prios said. I only came to this thread to look at some nice pictures of fish. Got rather more than I bargained for. :(

I don't understand why people can't just speak their mind without resorting to defiling the person they are upset with. What good does that do, really? It certainly doesn't make them stop, look, read, and listen to what you have to say. After they see the derrogatory comments..they just stop reading....so in essence you've just wasted your time, effort, and thoughts (plus made yourself look liek more of a jerk then the person you are trying to point a finger at).

Choice in wording is key when trying to make a point.

There is an old saying that rings VERY true in these instaces: You can draw more flies with honey then with vinager.

Just think about that.

Nice fish though, I also do not agree with the fighting of any animals..for whatever reasons...but that's just my 2 cents. I don't have preditor pets, for the simple reason I don't want to feed them live food either lol, but I do understand that some animals require meat to survive and prosper.

Hey SRC thanks for the comment though. Well atleast we can identify the people who are not into fish fighting or feeding live fish. This forum is the right place to exchange ideas and opinions and I do agree with you when you said " Choice in wording is key when trying to make a point ". We don't have to Bash or lambaste somebody if you don't agree with his ideas or opinions.

Let's make this thread educational and I'm sure we could learn from eachother as well. All we need is to respect eachother's opinion :D

Thanks

(You've got a Nice Signature though)

There will always be things in the world that some people find distasteful. It is usual on this forum to post some kind of warning if the topic may be distasteful. I only looked at this thread to look at fish or tank pictures! There was no warning to indicate that it may be offensive. Try making things plainer then people won't look by accident and be revolted.

Hi Cracker, stunning fighters you have there. i must add that i also came in here to look at some fish pictures, on reading further it seems apparent that when discussed with a worldwide audience the subject of fighting fish draws many opinions, SHOCK HORROR! funnily enough some cultures view this sport as an inhumane and cruel practice and others see it as a fantastic way of life (after all you cant go home after the fight and take a break, this stuff takes serious work and dedication).
How sad would it be if we all had the same views the same morals and the same traditions. i'm not even going to share my personal opinion on the subject because it's not important.

congratulations on your win cracker and thanks for sharing the pictures.

Thanks.... :) I like the shiney stuff .

Exactly how is one to know it's distasteful to others if they don't find it distasteful themselves?

That's asking alot of not only 1 individual, but an entire community...a community compiled of members of widely different regions, nationailties, and cultures.

What should really happen is.... people need realize we are on a public forum where anything is possible..since there are no rules against such things being discussed. When you open a betta (or any carniverous/hostile type fish) thread...from a poster you are unfamiliar with..you should keep your mind open to any and all possibilities...since you know beforehand that things that could offend you could possibly lie within.

We also need to keep our minds open to the possibility of what other people have experienced growing up in different places. What seems odd to you is perfectly normal to them, and what seems normal to you just may seem extremely odd to them..keep that in mind when making judgements of members from different countries and cultures. Just because you think somthing is right/wrong, doesn't neccessarily mean it truly is...only laws can dictate that.

I agree ! yeah that's why when I open up this thread, I already know that some people might agree and wont. I'm a professional hobbyist and respect the opinion of the others. I always see this type of small argument as a place for learnings and that makes up strong and more knowledgeable.

Bah, thats not true, think of all the weird and wonderful laws still in place.... If I remember, celebrating Xmas is still illegal in England because they've forgotten to get rid of the law Cromwell put in place.

That doesn't make me wrong.

It means that the citizens need to get off their lazy duffs and make thier lawmakers fix it...technically speaking, it's still against the law and you could be prosecuted for it if they so chose (let them try to pin a murder on you and they have no other just cause to arrest and hold you on...I bet that one would come in handy in a pinch)..if it is still a "law".

You can be silly and blow what I said off if you so choose...but you know what I was trying to imply. ;)

Oh, I know that, I just like finding the flaws (Thats the word I was after! I spent several minutes trying to think of the right word :X ) in people's arguements :D Actually, I'd need to check the legislation, but I think fighting bettas is technically illegal in the UK, even though fish aren't considered to be animals by some groups (rspca, for instance). Thats an odd paradox, in my mind, I'm sure if I sent an email to them saying I knew of groups in the UK who fight bettas (I don't, but hey), they'd tell me they really don't care... -_-

I'm sure it probably is..since clipping dogs ears/tails is against your laws over there...but this person lives in the Phillipines..and as far as I know..it's not against any laws over there (along with several other countries over that direction). I'd think the only thing that might be against the law might be the gambling aspect of it.

So my point is...if a person isn't brought up to "know" it's wrong to do something that is wrong in other parts of the world...and then they are judged by another cultures standards..and degraded for doing something that is socially acceptable in their culture...they aren't going to understand your view, or even care if the first thing you do is ream them and try to "rip them a new one" over it.

True, true. But whether it is 'socially acceptable in their culture', I do think that that is a rather poor reason, along with 'its traditional/in their culture', 'its in their nature', 'they're treated like kings' etc.

but this person lives in the Phillipines

Dang, while I was writing the post before this I was thinking 'musn't forget to put 'I know he's not in the UK'... All this 'Christmas' has ruined my memory :X.

How is that a poor reason? If you are brought up with eating Monkey Brains (which happens to be a rare delicacy in some parts of the world) as the social norm..then you go to France and all the kids made fun of you..would you understand why they were being so mean?

No, I would give the reasons that they taste nice, and other various things linked with it that I do not know as I do not eat monkey brains. And then I'd make fun of the Fench kids, because let's face it, there are more than enough things said about the French :)
