fish you never see…

apparently I still have at least one Kuhli Loach in one of my tanks, honestly it’s been at least 3 - 6 months since I’ve seen one… assumed they died off long ago, I saw it this morning for a flash, as I was turning on the main lights… this tank is viewable through both large sides, so I rarely miss anything in that tank… I recently added a couple dwarf crays to this tank, so I’ve been peering intently into it lately ( no sign of a kuhli ) I had no idea they were still in there…

any of you have a fish that you haven’t seen for so long you had given up on them as dead , only to have them show up later???

I don’t have those k loaches, but when I want to see into a tank at night for some reason and not spook the fish, I use a red light. Those head lamp lights sold as head bands or hat clip-ons work great. Sometimes I’m just curious about what’s going on and view the tanks in the dark with the red light. I still am careful not to make any sudden movements just in case they see more than I think they do.

I moved some Hyphessobrycon margitae from a tank they shared with Hoplisoma melini today. I hadn't see them in weeks. Now, in with Hyph. citrus and Hyph. metae (with Brochis splendens and some young, growing out Pelvicachromis taeniatus), they are out there showing off madly. Go figure.

You'd think they were always mad extroverts right now.

I don’t think mine are fully nocturnal as I used to see them in among the plant roots of the terrestrial plants growing out of the tank, but it’s been a long time since they have been above the substrate ( I was seeing 2 of them regularly… they went into the tank as smalls, and were huge last time I saw them )…I have 1-1.5 inches of 1 inch river pebbles on the bottom, and they seem to be able to easily swim between the gaps, and moved into the basement a long time ago, popping out once a week or so, and must be quite comfortable subterranean, as they have been staying unseen for longer and longer periods…

In my More heavily planted Tanks I will lose sight of a fish for months at a stretch, only for it to reappear at a later date.

I had a Gymnothorax Polyurandon moray that appeared in the sump and in particular a alfagrog chamber , I’d see its head sometimes for food sometimes I wouldn’t see it for weeks
When I sold it a few years later I found a fire eel I’d assumed had been dead for about a year

I keep a list of all my fish that die with the body found as well as fish that just disappear. Several fish that went on the “disappeared list” showed up months later.

My banjos would disappear for months on end. They grew well, but were a charge upon the stocking levels without ever being consistently visible. I finally caught them after a couple of years and sold them in a club auction.
