Hi there, So.. untill my tanks nice and established I can only think of what fish to buy.!! However I've never had a tank so small!! I was thinking perhaps a nice betta, few guppies and a bottom dweller of some sort! Any suggestions of what and how many!

you shouldent put guppies in a tank that small, you could get away with a betta, so some small schooling fish like Microrasbora Rubescens,  Microdevario nana, MOSQUITO CHILLI RASBORA

them 3 should be ok, you could also go for some dwarf shrimp, like cherrys

We have a thread on fish species suitable for small, 'nano' tanks, OP; it's here; http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/topic/416824-nano-fish/

Guppies would be fine or a betta. but you can't keep the two together. Bettas aren't the most intelligent fish on the planet, and they frequently mistake the long flowing tails of guppies for other bettas, and attack them.

There are no bottom dwellers for tanks of that size; all the very small catfish need to be in groups, which wouldn't leave you room for anything else, but you could have some freshwater shrimps, if you like, or snails

guppies are schooling fish, i thought they needed to be in groups, maybe endlers guppies would be ok

I would recommend neither guppies nor endlers, as they are schoolers, and quite active. They need longer tanks for racing. A 25 liter tank is suitable for a single betta, male or female, an ADF, shrimp, or snails. You may be able to get a crayfish, but I'm not positive. If you want a fish other than a betta, I would consider the frogs, or possibly some ember tetras. Ideally, you should get a larger tank. If you are unable to afford one, cherry shrimp and some snails would make a lovely nano tank.

Cheers there's some great suggestions. Tough to decide! I would Love to keep a little group of female bettas but I'd need to change all my plants which means more expense. Maybe guppies, an some dwarf shrimp!!

Guppies and Endlers aren't schooling, they just look better in bigger numbers.
Crayfish get very big I thought? Where is como? he can help us.
I wouldn't reccomend any tetra for a tank at small.

Sorry, they "shoal." The point is that they are very social fish.

I'm not so sure about how big the crayfish get, but I think there is a small species? I'm not sure. I know the orange crayfish is too big. I know for a fact, though, that the 25 liter is too small for more than one betta of either sex. So a sorority is out of the question, kazc31.

the fish i named are also small fish suitable for that size tank , you'd need a much bigger tank for female bettas

Yeah I gathered after reading more into it after considering changing to softer plants! I'd have been more than happy with a just 5 in my tiny tank! But clearly they need more space! How many guppies could I keep? Many Thanks for your advice!

Missed a couple of posts perhaps just a Siamese fighter for me!

you could have a fighter and some cherry shrimp

id say no no to cherries with Betta splendens aka siamese fighters.... they jus see the shrimp as snacks....

and you can keep about 6 boraras micros in there also you can have an all shrimp planted tank for shrimp propagation...

Whilst it's true that most fish are happy to be in a group, neither endlers nor guppies are one of the species that we generally say ought to be in a group of 6+, in the way that we do for tetras or cories, for example. It's good to keep guppies in groups, as it tends to keep the aggression within the species. They aren't particularly stressed being in singles.

Some bettas certainly do. Others don't. I've had a betta that didn't munch on cherry shrimp. I've also had a betta that did. It depends entirely on the temperament of the individual fish.
