Fish For A 20gal?

he likes tetras, but im not sure. i suggested he could get 4 different types of friendly tetras in groups of 5, and he could hav 4 schools of colorful fish. but then again, i also suggested kribs, they just seem so cool 2 me.

If he likes Tetras then why not get two groups of 10

if he's keen of the kribs, get 2 of these, or a pair of bolivian rams (they are lovely lookin fish and being cichlids have plenty of personality) then get 2 types of shoaling fish, like tetras (there are loads to choose from), barbs and maybe one odball or a catfish. then i reckon ur bro will be pretty much fully stocked.

Tetras has zero personality IMO and get bored quickly. So lets go with kribs or goodeids as they can be fun to work with. You said that your brother wants uncommon and oddball so goodeids are prefect for a 20gal.

Kribs are much fun that give youa chance to witness their parental skills but sometimes they can murder their sprouse.

Don't get puffers, they need some salt, which is not good for some other fish. Also, it will harass your other fish!

I would say tetras, barbs, and pigmy gouramis.

how about this!

he can get 1 tiger oscar...theyre pretty much puppies behind glass and in the water. getting 1 at 2-3 inches would be ideal but he would either have to sell it or get at least a 29g when full grown. oscars are one of the most loved fish and have loads of personality. mine was even trained to nudge a bell when he wanted food. even though he always nudged the bell lol.

anyways they love the hand that feeds (literaly) and are cheap, and easy to maintain. i was 13 when i had my first oscar which lived for 5 years until the power went out one week i was on vacation. i didnt know anything about weekly water changes or cyling when i had him so i imagine they are very hearty

1 oscar and 1 pleco would be it for that 20...mine grew up in a 10 gallon and was put into a 29 when he was 4 inches.

im sure people will go nuts over this post but thats my opinion and experience (my plant B to the dwarf puffers)

are u completey serious...

Oscars grow exremly fast, there is something wrong if u can keep an oscar in a 29 gallon. He would last maybe a month in a 20 gallon. Maybe another month in a 29 gallon and in about a year he will need at least a 75 gallon, AT LEAST. the pleco is different they grow slow but still need quite a large tank if ur talking about commons.

I would say go with some small colorful tetras some otos and a honey gourami.

A 29 is nowhere near enough for a single adult oscar. They won't even be able to turn around in a 55. They grow quickly, and the upgrade will have to come very soon, at least a 75 gallon tank. It would probably defeat the purpose of the 20 gallon to start with.

A convict would have all the personality of an oscar and could fit in such a tank.

ok, THIS may sound crazy 2 all of u, but listen 2 this. at my LFS, the had a full grown oscar IN A 10 GALLON! HE COULDNT EVEN MOVE! I FELT SO SORRY HIM. oh, and when my mom wuz little, she had 4 nickel sized oscars in a big tank (im not sure how big tho, but must of been HUGE! lol). -heart  , ally86ozzy

I've seen that in stores too. There's a couple differences from it at home: First, they fish *usually* aren't in LFS conditions for long. He'll either be sold or dead in a few weeks. Two of the stores in my area have had big oscars taking up space for months, but they're in big tanks. Also, most LFS have more water in the system than is visible in the tank - the actual filtration is done in another container in the back room. It doesn't give the fish any more space, but in a typical 10 gallon home setup, an oscar would be choking on its own waste. At least in the LFS, the water is probably clean. Think of it like a kennel - you might adopt a big dog that's been kept in a 2x4 cage for the last couple weeks, but you wouldn't take it home and put it back in a similar cage.

i think what others have said, kribs are awesome little fish and hardy too, you could also try bolivian rams, most dwarf cichlids have some sort of a personality :good:
or maybe a pair of honey or pearl gouramies instead, such a large variety its up to him :hyper:

yeah it is up 2 him, but he put it up 2 me 2 find fish 4 him, lol! i like gouramis :) .
