First Time Fish Keeper - Help Me For My 5 Year Olds Sake!

I would certainly NOT put any goldfish in a tank that small, especially not for a five-year-old. Goldfish produce a lot of waste, so the water will have to be changed very often. A betta will work well in that size tank and you'll have to do water changes maybe once per week.

it will take more than a week in my opinion
rodents smell and bite !!!!
hey you rats dont bite!! ,rats are tottally different ball game lol
but im glad your trying to get everythin right :good:
oh sorry..... maybe rats dont bite, i've never kept them so couldn't say......but....rats aren't the only rodent, gerbils, hamsters, mice etc do bite, and it hurts like hell

I think this is the point where alot of people get frustrated and decide not to keep fish. Please do not do that! Fish keeping is one of the most rewarding hobbies I know of. At first it seems soooo complicated. Once you get the tank cycled, things will go so much better. And places like this didn't exist when I started( there wasn't an internet) Just take a deep breath and start doing some research. First, learn about cycling your tank... then start cycling. Don't worry about what to put in the tank for now. Just get it cycled and start creating a living area for your creatures. It will all fall into place. Get your son into the cycling process. Have him help with the water tests. Explain to him that you have to get the water ready for the fish to live in.

i couldn't agree more, you may be suprised by just how much interest the little one will take in the science stuff if you broach the subject carefully & good luck

Bain of my life the water tests! 7pm every night my 3 year old runs into the front room DADDY FISHY TIME! He will then count each and every drop of the Api test kit aloud and then tell me what colour they change to....bah who needs a xbox :good:

My five year old son does the same thing, and I even let him run the pH tests when I do them. :good:

Agreed kids love helping out, my 2 year old sister brings the fish food to me every morning to feed her babies
