Im getting ready to change my filter and it has been brought to my attention that just pulling out the cartridge and putting in a new one is not how it is done, the more I learn the more apparent this is. Could anyone give me tips on how to change it properly? Thank You so much! -Bridget

what make is the filter on most filters it is best just to rinse the dirt from the media in some tank water in a bucket then just put the same peice back in the filter

Are you talking about keeping the same filter, just changing the sponge inside?
As jacko said, don't! The bumf that came with the tank will tell you to, but that's so they can keep selling you new sponges. All your good bacteria are living on those sponges, you don't want to chuck them in the bin! Just rinse out any gunk in tank water (NOT tap) and put them back in
