Filter Size

I'm sure there are rules and guides but I prefer opinions. I have a fluval 105 external canister filter in my roma 125ltr, my stock is currently 6 black neons, 6 neons, 5 panda corys and 4 guppies, do I need/would I benefit from a bigger filter? I'm only looking to add a further 2 centrepiece fish such as kribs or rams.

a quide is that you want to turn water over 5/6 times per hour.you filter is rated at 480 litres per hour which makes your turn over not even 4 times.

also most filter rating are taken without media and sponges in so in the real world turn over is going to be lower.

stick with with your fluval and get another to run with it.gives you back if one packs up and when carring out cleaning you can leave the other going.

i run two externals on my 120 lt tank,one eheim 2224 and tetratec 700 which makes my turn over about 10/11 times an hour,tank is always super clear!!

if you dont mind running and looking after two then i think its a good way to go.

According to the manual that came with my Fluval, the 105 takes 10W to run, the 205 also 10W, the 305 15W and the 405 20W. A 205 should be sufficient and you shouldn't see any increase in running costs.

Bumping this as I've discovered the All Pond Solutions EF1000, which seems like excellent value for money, claiming to turnover 1000lph for aquariums up to 400litres. I've heard a lot of people moan about the flow rate though. Would this filter actually be an upgrade, only asking because someone has reviewed that the actual flow with media is more like 350lph?

It wont flow any where near and will be money down the drain, the APS 2000 can just about break 900LPH so the 1000 will be about 400 i was think

If adding another filter then go for the aps, if swapping the filter then go for a tetratec ex700.

For th eprice difference get the 1200 £85 you can reduce the flow with the suplies inlet/outlet taps and you can just pop into a bigger tank when it happens and it will happen

Hold on, if you want good quality, go for the Fluval 205 in my opinion (also if you were posibly in mind to sell the 105 if its still in good nick, i would take it of you )....

Yep, if you can stretch to the 1200 then that would be the better option for sure... although check on the sizes as the filter is pretty big and may not fit in the cabinet. The sizes are on their website.

I'm swaying towards the 205 to be honest as my 105 has been very reliable. Would the jbl e107 be big enough? Choosing a new filter is hard work! I may well sell the 105 when I've made a decision, will give you a shout if I do.
