i have a canister filter with just the basic setup i got with it sponge, balls, carbon and i was wondering if there are any better medias out there for a canister, (not looking for a sump or anything) EHFISUBSTRAT does anyone use that i have been told its pretty good never really needs changing just washing with old tank water. anyway any feedback welcome!

sponge and balls is for bacteria, carbon ad filter floss are to polish water but carbon will remove meds =]

im still using what came with mine, lol

looks like chocolate cereals is the only way to describe it. like little balls, lol

along with like tube type things and a foam filter

Im using a fluval filter, Im using the sponge and all baskets containing biomax or bioballs

You want something which has a large surface area. Activated carbon works well as it is very porous although the carbon will stop removing meds once it has been in the filter for 2 weeks and just become biological media. Just leave it as is the only thing I would add is some filter wool to polish the water apart from that it will work fine. If you wanted to go a little DIY you could build a sand reactor filter which is where sand is constantly kept aloft in the flow of water it acts as very good biological filtration due to the high water flow and large surface area of the sand grains combined.

i run 2 fluval 205,s with 2 fine and 2 course sponges 2 trays of bio balls and 1 tray of bio max in each
i have tried different set ups but this works best for me.
