Okay,

right now i have a juwel Rio 180, im running the juwel bioflow 6.0 internal that came with it, along with a Fluval 105 that came off my old smaller tank.

what i want to do in a few weeks or so is get a large canister of about 1400Lph or so for the tank, and eventually just have that running.

The tank is around 80% stocking and what i was thinking was to eith take ALL the media from the fluval and juwel and put it in the new filter, or take all the media just from the fluval, run the new can and the juwel for a while, and then move accross the juwel media. eventually i wish to have just the new canister running.

Which of these (or any other) ideas would be best?

i would put the juwel media in the new cannister. and remover the junk, quick. remove some of the juwel media each week. replacing it with some from the 105. do this over a few weeks, and you should be fine.

i dont have the space to run both canisters at once, so either way the fluval needs to go...

Ok. so lets put the Fluval media in the new filter, as well as, most, of the media that comes with it. and swap it out, bit by bit. after a week, i would remove the Juwel item. placing the media in a bag/stocking/tights, below the intake of the new filter. (remember, with this and the Fluval media, wring out/rinse the media into the cannister, as you swap it out.

instead of putting it in a bag, could i not just put it inside the new canister? there is more than enough room...

I don't really see any problem with slinging all the old media from both filters into the new one. Just make sure your on top of any ammonia/nitrite spikes. Might also help to buy some Bacteria Boosters, not live bacteria but growth chemicals for them, such as bactozym.

i would assume, the reason that wont work is, there is not enough room. and internals, usually, have sponge media. cannisters do not, for bio media anyway. if you are thinking of Biozyme, just send me the money, instead. it will have just as much effect on your filter. :hyper:

Majority of externals come with enough space for you transfer sponge media into.
My EPF150 had a whole tray spare for exactly that reason. I mean sure, I had to cut it to fit it in, but I got the #19### in there!
And no, I'm thinking of Bactozym. As I said before, not one of those cheap off the shelf "bacteria in a bottle" products, this stuff provides growth stimulants for the bacteria, causing them to reproduce faster.

if i'm honest i'm pretty lazy when it comes to upgrading filters or moving fish from one tank to the other. i just load all the media into the new filter and keep an eye on the water stats for a few days. never lost any fish in the process.

sorry that's what i meant (typo). and i stand by my comments, send me the money. these things do work, sadly, only in the mind of the keeper. but, often, that's enough.

as for room in the filter. as the epf*** are now defunct, intrapet don't admit to selling them any more. (and i have their email to prove my point), i cant speak for them. but if you have space (not a void at the bottom for catching substrate) you aint got enough media in there, to start with. i do see your point, i just have a different view on the problem.

I suppose my findings of doing a 2.5 week cycle using the stuff wouldn't change your mind? Of course these findings are only circumstancial and wont work for everyone, but still..you know, evidence of it working in atleast some cases. This cycle was also done fish-in, using no mature media and with frequent water changes (which might of admittedly, sped the cycle up).

I find this part hard to believe as I still see them being sold and not only that, both Interpets Online and Physical brochures contain them, with pretty high reviews from outside aswell. I originally bought this one as a cheap means for my 64L, rather than splash out the same amount of money on a filter that the tank cost me, I got it (on ebay admittedly) for £40 and I can't actually hear it, at all, it's an awful lot quieter than any Fluval, Eheim or TetraTec I've ever had. Again, I know, circumstancial, but still, the evidence is there.

Ah I should also mention that I do plan on opening my own LFS in the near future, hence when I requested brochures, all of which still have the EPF advertised with complete parts and replacements available as well.

As you said, same problem, just different view points; it wouldn't be fish-keeping without someone arguing the other side :D

Dear Tylor
Unfortunately Interpet do not sell external fiters anymore, so we are not able to help you in this instance.
May we suggest you search the Internet, or again, contact Hydor who may be able to help you
