Filter Issues

i have just had a juwel aquarium for my birthday and its called a korall-60. Inside it's got a bioflow mini filter, my question is it's only got 1 blue sponge inside, how do i clean it and keep all of the bacteria i've collected? and how often should i clean it?
As this is my first tank i havent got alot of experience but look forward to buying my first lot of neon tetras this saturday fishys yay

First off have a read through the link in my sig about fishless cycling - VERY important.

Second - neons are very 'weak' fish and arent the best to get as a first fish so its advisable as a first tetra to get something else. There are many to pick from, try the Fish Index on this site.

As for your sponge, once its cycled i'd perhaps give it a light rinse in old tank water (NOT tap water) and this will keep the bacteria alive, but get rid of some of the gunk.

Patience is everything in this hobby, don't rush...
