Fighting Mollies And Ich

Hello,

I have kept fish in the past and have a new setup as of 3 weeks ago. I stumbled across this website while trying to find information on white spot! I have now addressed this problem and have now discovered another problem!

we currently have

5 neon tetras
4 2" silver sharks
2 black male mollies
2 silver female mollies

It was through this forum that i discovered the sex of my mollies. One of my female mollies is constantly hiding behide the filter hose. We have been observing the tank activity and have found that the other female has been really aggressive towards it - causing her to hide all the time. Can anybody tell me how to stop the bully! It is such a shame that she hides all the time. She only comes out when the bully draws her out. She is looking really weak. It is early days for the mollies, they were introduced to the tank 3 days ago.

Also, i removed the carbon from our external fluval filter before treatment for the ich. can i return the old carbon or put a new one in and when should i replace it? Our local shop gave us WSP 48hr treatment.

I had a male Platy bully another, unfortunately, with bullying fish, the only thing you can really do is seperate them, people reccomend adding more to lessen the tension.. but then you could end up with thousands of fry everywhere. Or it could make it even worse.

I think the male to female ratio for mollies is 1 male to 2 females if not more.

How big is your tank?

moving rocks around could help, as justjon said, seperating or adding more would work, if you are okay with the possibility of fry.

i think upping the number of females to 6 would take the attention off the one female.

Also do you know how big silver sharks get?

I dont bother with carbon myself, so im afaid i cant help there!

Hello,

You could try a tank divider. You could then separate the female and one of the males. Try keeping them apart for a couple of weeks. This will allow your failing female to recover somewhat and the males a chance to get used to the sight of each other. The males are trying to establish "top dog" status. How big are your mollies?
If the use of a tank divider is not possible then you could try one of the small cheapo plastic tanks that places like Wilco sell (approx £6). As an emergency measure, I drilled (actually melted) a few dozen small holes in it. This was then temporarily fixed in my main tank for a few days while I sorted out an issue with another tank.

Others will give advice on the carbon... personally, I think this stuff was sent by the devil... I **HATE** it!!

Assuming that the sharks will tolerate it (ask here, as I don't know their specific requirements), I'd recommend adding one teaspoon of aquarium salt per 10 litres of tank water. Initally, add this to the tank environment slowly. Afterwards just add the correct amount in your water changes. This will prevent most problems with fungal infections etc.

In my experience, your mollies will probably settle down in time. You will still get the odd spat, but these tend to be relatively minor.

BTW, prepare yourself for molly fry in the not too distant future!

Its the female attacking the other female,they are about 2 inches big btw.
