My 30L is now free, and i'm looking for fish
I wanted a single colourful fish that's pretty sociable - it could end up in another tank with platies and tetras

I was thinking along the lines of:
Honey gourami
Female betta
Male guppy(ies?)

It needs to be common too - my LFS doesn't usually stock oddballs (or endlers, if you were going to suggest them )

well you are limited by space but I supose a small gourami may work or how about a Siamese fighter?

What species of Gourami are you thinking and how many.
You could have either:
2 Honey Gourami
OR
4 Sparkling Gourami
OR
1 Honey Gourami

The tank has a mirrored back, so bettas/fighters are out

I was thinking of 1 male honey G, but hadn't thought about sparkling Gs. LFS don't usually have them, but they do seem interesting.
Do sparkling Gs need to be in groups? I'd rather have a single one to eliminate bullying as the tank is very small

Sparkling gouramis in my experience are extremely shy. Very pretty, definitely not centerpiece fish though and they do need to be kept in groups much like tetras etc so that they feel safe. Also lots and lots of plants are a must if you wanted them.

Personally I think your best bet is a honey gourami or a female fight. With my preferance being for the honey gourami.

LFS have some lovely powder blue honeys, but they do seem to get pretty big when adult. The tank is 40cmx40cmx20cm. Are they active?
All of the dwarf Gs tend to be ill at LFS, so i wouldn't risk one. I've never seen blue rams in stock
Would a trio of male guppies be ok?

Powder blue gouramis are dwarves not honeys. Hence why they get a bit bigger

I wouldn't feel comfortable with a dwarf in there either.

But honeys should be fine, and they come in bright yellow, gold, red, orange and wild type. Wild type is similar to yellow, but yellows have been bred to be a much more vivid yellow than the average wild type.

Edit: Just to add, a trio of male guppies should be fine, but wouldn't (imo) be much of a feature fish.

Aha, very clever I think i saw some red honeys, i'll have to take a look next time i go

I like the idea of guppies because they're colourful, hardy and would get along with the main tank fish if i need to move them. How much do guppy males bully?

Unless you have a bare tank, this should not be a problem, by the least the betta should stop flaring when hes happy.

The sides of my tank is mirrored.

I think a crowntail or halfmoon male would fit just right in that tank.

I'd love a male betta, but because the tank is tall rather than wide most of the top half of the mirror is bare. The poor betta would stress himself out
