Did exactly the same 2 days ago. I have posted here what I did. I have the lido 120 and installed a fluval 205. I installed the intake on the left hand side, and mounted the outlet on the righ hand side and have the outlet just under the existing internal outlet. This way there are two streams of water coming from the same direction.. It has been running for 3 days now and I think my tank is now looking cleaner...I am not sure if I will remove the internal in the long run, but will wait for the fluval to establish.. Let me know why you chose to install an external.?

I chose the external - because I kept having milky water - around the tank - I could not get rid of - and all chemicals were fine each time. So I decided to go with an external as well - as I always had in the past larger tanks operating properly with externals. Personally - if you have a small tank and not much poo around and food around then you need not to fuss about FILTRATION. However if you are fussed about water quality and making sure all is CLEAN - then over filtering is never an issue. The larger the better and the ability for you to regulate flow of water. Makes maintenance easier and quicker - when all is running properly and you do not need to mess around with chemicals etc, to get stuff right in your tank. I believe in chemical free - where possible - so allow all of this to happen in a good filtration system - which is the HEART of an aquarium...

I actually did it the other way around this morning after posting the above thread,
I have the external intake below the internal filter,, i really did wonder which way would be best and if there was a best way?
But my thoughts were being the fluval is more powerful it would keep the current flowing nicely towards the intake and internal filter?
Really decided to add external just to help with keeping the tank levels on top form and alot cleaner,, Not that i have much issue with it,
but after trial and error in my early days of fish keeping, and losing fish to levels jumping around, and from the reviews i have read and heard about had good they are,
just seemed a good way to go, i have got myself into a committed once a week water change with the my tanks and changing the juwel wool filter as soon as it looks groggy etc
i also like to keep a few pleco's and catfish which are big waste producers, so it all helps to keep everything spot on!
i'm also just about to set up a malawi tank in my rio 180. which i'm going to buy another fluval 405 for, although i am debating whether or not to add the juwel filter back into it,
as it was removed when i bought the tank 2nd hand,
and yourself? how comes you added one to your tank?
