Eheim Surface Skimmer

Anybody got one of these? I have the 'film' on my water surface, so i found this.

Does it still take water in from the bottom of the tank as well as the top?

A photo i saw looked like it caused disturbance of the water surface (something i need!), does it do this?

I was initially thinking of getting a duck-bill output for my second filter so i could cause some surface disturbance. Would this alone get rid of the oil and put some air into the tank without the need for this expensive gizmo?

I thought of getting one of these as I was getting the same 'film' on my tank, all I did was get a Eheim installation kit 2 (cheaper) which comes with three adjustable sections of spray bar, I directed one to the surface to create a bit of aggitation and get some air into the tank and two down into the tank to create some flow and I never saw the film again.

The thing has great reviews! But i did as you have done, and just aggravated the surface with my outlet. I now have two filters, so one is a spray bar pumping out diffused CO2, the other is just a hose sitting on the water surface. I get a lot of noise from the outlet sitting on the water surface though, so i wonder if this gizmo would get rid of that negative....

For now my water has cleared up, as in your case. But now i need to worry about putting oxygen in and counteracting the good of my CO2

I have my bar slighly underwater, one section of bar is angled up 45 degrees which causes the water to shoot (very slightly) out of the tank and back down into it creating aggitation and bubbles, those bubbles then hit the two sections pointing into the tank and they distribute the bubbles throughout the tank. With this method there is only a very slight sound of a trickle from the water breaking the surface.
