Eheim Classic Splashbar Placement?

Hello,
 
I just set up a new Ehim Classic Canister 600 (formerly 2217) for my 55 gal. I am not sure how to set up the splashbar.
 
In Tank: unplanted and I will be putting in platys, guppies, tetras.
 
I have it sitting about 1.5 inches below the water level on the back of the tank in the center.
 
The water flow seems to be aimed straight down.
 
Is this okay?

i have mine under the water but aiming up so that it will provide surface agitation for air transfer
how effective that is i dont know but my fish dont seem to mind

i'd say you want it to ripple the surface of the water to agitate it helping with oxygen
