Drift Wood

I bought some drift wood on Saturday and have been soaking it in warm water since then. It is still turning the water in the sink brown, how long does it normally take for this to stop? My dishes desperately need to be washed

Try using boiling water.

Some people say a few days, others say weeks or even months. Try the search function on the forum and enter 'bogwood', it will pick up all the threads that are similar to this, might help you with hints/tips and time frames x

i have read people talking up to a year to stop tannin release. So i'd buy a dish washer. Your can always use some 'new' activated carbon in your filter, you might need to add another lot of carbon after a week, just to make sure you get the main tannin release.

do the boiling water bit then a mega wash under cold tap if still leaching pm me will tell you where to get good wood dont go down get dishwasher road takeaways r great .

i had my bit soaking in the bath changing the water every 12 hours for hot water only. i did that for 5 days, i put the wood in my tank yesterday and it dont seem to be leaking anymore, but it depends on each piece of wood. the would i got is mopani wood.

I soaked mine for around 4 hours. Got bored and just put it in the tank. The slight tanning actually looks pretty good! I got rid of most of it within that 4 hours tho, I gave it a good clean with my hands.

Next im going to grow some javamoss on it, the tanning will make a planted tank look abit mystic i think

Thanks for the help guys. I'm going to try one more day of soaking in hot water and then just put it in I think. The amount of tannins seems to be slowing down a lot, hopefully it will get the rest out tomorrow
