I bought some drift wood because it looked so cool, but it occurred to me that I am not really sure that I know how to treat it so it won't turn my tank brown :p Not that I would mind the brown, it's the getting the brown out of the water later that I'm not looking forward to.
So what are some things I can do? Do I boil it or just let it soak? It's a floaty piece so I'll have to weight it down but that isn't a problem.

Boiling will get the job done faster. As for removing the stain of the water, just use carbon in the filter. Leave it in until you notice the water turning again then change it out for fresh stuff.

The color of tea is not a problem for your fish. If you do not like it, do more frequent and larger water changes. I do not find it offensive so I accept the water color change. Carbon can be used to remove color from water. It is effective until the amount of color in your tank water exhausts it. Estimates vary from a few days to a couple of weeks for that adsorption exhaustion to happen.
