Don't Mean To Make Anyone Jealous, But Look What I Found

I cant see any difference. If so that is oak or somthing equaly tough. One more question. How hard was it to cut with a saw?

another way to tell is dig your thumb nail into it - soft wood gives under the pressure, hard wood doesn't :)

Hit the cross section lightly with a hammer. How easy is it to mark?

easy = soft

hard = errrr, well, hard

Tom

Edit, looks hard to me.

What? soft wood stays green all year, hard wood doesent. Believe it or not but balsa wood is a hardwood.

Edited cos i'm thick and got it backwards.... :blush:

Ok point taken, im pretty sure it isnt balsa though, :shifty:, which is by definition a hardwood but probably wouldnt of held up to the hammer test too well.

When I say harwood I am in fact talking about oak, yew etc. Stuff that is actualy hard & tough, as opposed to somthing that will disintergrate in the tank.

Hope I have made myself slightly clearer.

Tom

personally i dont like the look of it... but great find if you do =]

hard wood also tends to be very heavy compared to soft wood. lovely piece of wood. and to get the bark of i take as much loose barb of as possible then pull out a flat screw driver and hammer, and don't forget to sand after.

I have started to jet wash it. Do I need to get all the brown bark like skin off? So it's a light wood colour?

Still got a lot more jet washing to go. Yeah they probably thought that especially when I had some orange safety glasses on from a kids nerf gun set lol

Nice wood!! :shifty: I found some very nice peices in the creek last week!! But I have a lot of sanding to do!! I figured I could get one of the wire brush ends for a drill and clean it up pretty quick with it. Nice find!!

I'm going to be watching this thread for tips. I'm fed up seeing nice pieces in the LFS and then almost collapsing when I see the price tag.

im tempted to hire a canoe from frimley lodge park and cut some of the tree roots off that are in the basingstoke canal. looks like swamp root.

Let me know when you start doing this, ill do the same at Galleon Marina at Odiham, and we'll meet in the middle somewhere! lol

There seems to have been lots of people recently "beating" the LFS with the wood thats available. And i too think the LFS wood prices are a p*** take.
