Anyone ever trod a canal boat through a cavern?

I have. Where I live in what is known as The Black Country there is a long passageway that a canal runs through, that years ago, anyone who wanted to move things through the canal, had to tread the wall of the sides of the cave to get the barges through.

The BBC website has a piece on the history of this part of my local area today that is quite interesting, as the area we live in today was close to what is now Brazil. The Dudley Bug, which was a marine anthropod was found here. And ripple beds were created here where the sea was.
