oh....okay

Maybe it was the boxes then. That and a combination of the heat, I would imagine.

I'm not bashing anyone..just giving out my opinion of what could have happened here..so please don't take it as that I might be..m'kay?
The box I received mine is was about 1/4 the size of the ones Kelly has sent all the ones I've gotten from her in. The ones Kelly uses are the same size as the ones I've gotten all my AB bettas from.
Kelly also uses foam and cuts it to fit inside the boxes, for stability and insulation. Kelly has sent the type foam you use in basements for insulation (there is a pink kind, and one that is white with silver stuff on it)..but you could use the dry floral foam from the crafts section at Wal-mart just as well...anything to keep them from getting jossled around and squished so much. Foam peanuts are not the best idea imo...the peanuts themselves can catch a a betta off guard over in the corner of a bag and squish it..which can and will = a dead betta.
The ones I got from Synnir only had styrofam peanuts in the box and the bag. Quite frankly I was surprised mine wasn't dead (no offence Synirr) because of the way the USPS usually handles the mail...they aren't delicate with it by any means. Not even when it says FRAGILE on it...in all honesty, I think that makes them toss it around more.
Kelly only charged me $4 for shipping...although when I got it I saw that it had cost her $6 and I sent her the other $2 (which btw she never even hinted about wanting back).
So I guess the moral to my story is...even if it cost more to have them shipped in the bigger box with insulation...it's worth the $6-8, imho, I mean you are still getting a free, greatly bred betta...so paying for shipping shouldn't bother you too awful bad...whatever she charges.
My offer still stands. I've got probably 5 -6 boxes with the insulation stuff I could break down, stick in a bigger box, and send to you...just pay for the shipping.
