hey,i got a 6gal tank and i am pondering which aquatic beast's should make up its populace
its not the best attitude to go in with but i am thinkin a bit of a nu rave kinda lay ou...
black gravel, yellow backdrop, green plants an a bubble tube with a blue light fitted to it,and finaly...either a small stone cave or a bogwood cave (does coloured bogwood exist)
if its important to anyone the tank is a half hex shape, should look pretty funky

so i am looking for fish that look cool and are a good introduction to the hobby as i only have basic experience

ok tigers,fire away

Lol sorry im confussed, do you want to keep fish are buy a colourful ornament? I wouldnt mix the 2 ;)

As far as the size goes, a betta or a few shrimp is about it in 6g.

plastic fish with little lead weights that hold them in the water :)

most honest answer...both

obviously its not a case of going out and buying any old fish because its colorful.
that why i am on a forum to get the opinions of people who know a lot more than me because
my fish knowledge only consists of 2 books and 4 months of having a catfish.
its not much but i am eager to try and make the best i can with the resources available to me as a pet, a hobby and a piece of art (in that order)
i suppose i came across as more passionate about the decor than the fish but that's because the decor is the only thing that has been decided yet.
(but still ever changing)

what about smaller fishies like neon's or dwarf corys?

i think a betta would be the best bet loads of colours to choose from you could even get one to match your decor lol
:good: scot

endlers are very brightly coloured, they'd fit in.

Or shrimp. Can get some bright red cherry shrimp. :shout:

Do you already have the tank or are you planning to buy it?

If you don't have it yet i would consider getting something bigger as it will give you a lot more options, a good starter size is 20/30 Gallons if you have the room. You will only end up doing what i did and get a bigger tank after seeing all the fish you can't keep because of the size of the tank when your looking round shops or online.

If you do have it I would recomend either a single Male Betta (and possible some Anamo shrimp tankmates) or a Shrimp tank. I have kept both in my 7 Gal at different times and have been happy with both of them. The only other aquatic creature i can think of from the top of my head for a tank this size are Snails.

I have seen bogwood that has been stained certain colours in some LFS. I have seen it stained red, blue, green and black, but to be honest I prefer the more natural look of normal brown wood so have never owned any and have no idea how well the colour lasts or if it leeches out into the water.

A Betta (sometimes known as Siemese Fighting Fish, hate that!) would go in there nicely

Please, Please do read up on how to keep them BEFORE you consider getting one though.

There is a Betta section on this forum.

I consider myself pretty gen'ed up on basic fishkeeping but before I got a Betta (2 weekends ago) I did all the research I could.........the result?.......one VERY happy fish (and keeper!)

thanx for the replys
sadly i already own the tank,i would have got a larger one but is was a present so i didnt pick it out
shrimp is a cool idea except the tank is pretty tall but not very wide :

would a few neons be ok in there?

a betta could be cool, depends if it comes in zebra print with a pink trim lol

i'm gonna have to seriously think about the aquatic beast i choose

will post again later,i gotta get ready for work

Neons are very active and need a larger tank. :(

Shrimp dont care about the shape of the tank, they go anywhere. :good: They're perfect for small tanks.

For the bright garish tank you are going for.. i would go for the endlers (you cant get more nu rave than those I reckon) and red cherry shrimp.

Both being pretty small you can fit in a few of each and they will be active enough to be interesting to watch.

Bear in mind that if you put anything like rocks or stones in a tank that small, it will displace water; you don't have a lot of space to begin with before adding rockwork. Maybe a few more plants is the way to go.
