I know dwarf gouramis can breathe air with their labyrinth organ, but can they use their gills in well oxygenated water or do they have to get to the surface?

I have read that they must have access to the surface as they can't rely solely on the gills. I have also read that they must obtain some of their oxygen thru the gills and can't rely solely on the labyrinth organ. Finally, I have read that if the labyrinth organ is destroyed, the fish will die. I have no idea how much truth there is to any of this.

Hi

Yes they definately need constant access to the surface no matter how much oxygen is in the water. Also would recommend a cover glass between the canopy and the surface as it allows for warmer air at the surface.

100% correct. If the air temp is too cold it can damage the labyrinth organ. Gouramis are also known as escape artists so having a top of some sort is very important to keep them from jumping out of the tank.

Ok, turns out he can get up to the tank top just fine. He was just moved into a new tank, so he was just being a bit lethargic. He's his normal self now.
