Do Fish Sleep!

was watching a lee evans dvd the other day about his goldfish not having eyelids and not being able to sleep!!
I know this is a comedian, but raises a good point!!
do they sleep??? and if so how do they do it? when ever i come to the tank any time of day the angels are swimming and never seem to have a rest.
i do see my SAE rest on the bogwood when the lights go off but this is the only fish iv seen do it!

They do sleep,i know that much,but how im not sure....

I don't know how but yeah. Sometimes if you look closely at night,you can see they're not really moving about (not resting on the floor though) and that they can't see you like they normally can.

Yes they do, they seem to go into a trance like state,my chocolate cichlid changes colour to yellow and brown stripes.this is when you can wave your hands in front of him and he will continue to stay asleep not affected at all....My uncle sleeps without closing his eyes,so id imagine its like that

ahh!! iv heard of people that do this!! would freak me out!! lol. its cool to know though that they do sleep. But would they be prone to being eaten in the wild?
flamingos do a sort of thing where they sleep with half their body at a time to escape predation.
i know reef fish hide away at night, do fresh water or do they have some sort of sleep pattern like a flamingo.
i think its facinating

Guppys sleep on gravel and plants,cardinals loose the neon blue and red bits at night.

my puffers definitely sleep, they curl up in a cave or on the gravel if i turn the light on it takes them awhile to wake up they swim about bumping into thing for a couple of minutes.
the best fish of all for sleeping is clown loaches they actually lie down when they sleep.

My tetras usually settle down around 10pm. They go under the internal filter where it must have less current and just sort of hover. I am presuming they are sleeping.
