DIY Skimmer

I don't fully understand how they work as i've never seen one for real, or seen one in operation. But from this picture, this basic model looks fairly easy to replicate.

I am completely new to saltwater aquariums so am only just starting my research. Could someone please tell me where the water level would be for this skimmer, and does the cup have any small holes in for any water to run out of, or is this not an issue?

Matt

edit: looking again, I see this sits on top of the tank/sump so guess the water level would be around the second green band??

edit 2: i think this model (picallo) only costs £18 brand new!!

You have to have a motor pump with it for it the work. The plastic alone is just the structure. Unless it's air operated, which personally I don't recommend getting. :)

??
I thought that was exactly how skimmers worked...

Air powered, they use very fine bubbles (from a wooden air block) to 'grab' the protiens etc from the water...
the foam then rises up the tube as its created. from there its removed from the tank.

a protein skimmer is somewhat hard to make and can be more expencive to make unless you have a big tank (100G+) also the dont look very good when you make them, i say stick with a cheap one (cheapest iv seen is 20$ )
