Do they really need the sparkling clean water with daily water changes that they are made out to require? Can they not survive with only weekly water changes happily?

I'm not an expert on discus and have never kept them but from what I have read about them in the past I understand that for juveniles they do require daily water changes of about 90% whereas when they get older you can reduce that to around 2/3 a week of about 90%

Hopefully somebody who keeps discus will be able to help you with more accurate information but I dont think 1 weekly water change is sufficient.

Thats what is required for juvenile discus, they are an extremely advanced fish to look after and require time and dedication. I know several fishkeepers who have kept fish for 10 years+ and still wouldn't consider themselves experienced enough for discus.

As has been said before about many fish, surviving and thriving are 2 very different things. You need to be aiming for your fish to thrive not just survive.

There is a discus keeper on this forum who changes 100% water daily for his juve's, cant remember his username.

Alot of trouble indeed.

I Would NEVER try to keep a discus.

As i've stated.

my moms kept All sorts of cichlids / Community fish And Cant bring herself down to buying discus as there hard to keep.
