Discus, Min Tank Height?

Hi there,

We have a spare tank and are thinking about setting up a discus tank for something different to try. Other fish are RTC, piranah, arrowana and birchir (not all the same tanks )

Have seen a pair of 3" red turks, now just wondering what the ideal tank height is for them? Iv heard that they pref a deep tank to help with the pressure yet other people say for breeding that a shallow tank is better

Tank is mature and im aware that it should be running around 6.5 and the temp a bit higher.

Yeh temp like 28 C.Min height for adults 16 inches.You can't have breeding Discus at 3' inches so thats rubbish if thats what you have been told.Tank should be about 55gals for minimun of 5Discus.

No he hasnt said they are breeding. Boy basically said that they are beginning to pair off from the rest of the group. he is selling these two and 3 red Alenquer Discus.

What size can they begin to be sexed at?

16" Min height, and Discus cn onlybe sexed when breeding. But.. something i heard is set up a tank and have the temp lower than the tank its come from, and itd breeding tube comes out if its straight its a girl if it bends backwars its a boy.this is abit cruel so i have never tried it.

Yea i second that Discus angel,i wouldn't try it I would either get an adult pair or try and set up a large display aquarium.

Best thing to do is, 6 5"discus. and watc a pair form... then remove the rest.

It might be a bit awkward trying to rehome them all at once,especially when k17sty has not got another spare tank (i think).But yea that would probably be good

Ask the lfs that your tryig to start a breeding program... then say once 2 have paired of can i return the other 4?

Well the taller the better.. but 16" is the absoulute BARE min.

It's not really a matter of pushing it or not, it's up to you if you want stunted fish or not.

Anyways the height of an aquarium will not stunt Discus
