Mine is 15". Lol i really push it.

It's not really a matter of pushing it or not, it's up to you if you want stunted fish or not.

Thats a bit out of order.prettydiscus only said "mine is 15'.i really push it lol"
Anyways the height of an aquarium will not stunt Discus :grr:

How is that out of order!? I didn't say anything offensive i'm just saying that it's up to you to pick the right sized fish tank. And, if you ask me depth does matter when you want a fish to grow to it's peak height.

DiscusLova, Discus usually get to 7" whilst anything above that is quite rare. If the depth of the tank is double the depth of the fishes' body then they have equal room to spread their fins.

Let me get this straight. You think having a taller tank will make a Discus grow larger?

thats pretty much right, alhough you have to take in account the substrate,if any is being used.

Can someone else back me up here with giving the correct information? cheesy feet, i belive that if you have a tank that isn't big enough for the Discus to have there fins fully extended with room to move around in diffrent depths and play, then yes it's going to have a negative effect on the Discus' size, within range of the normal height Discus should grow of course. I'm not sure about this 7" rule though, even though it's been said i've seen way bigger then that, guys that are the size of dinner plates! If you give them enough room to grow, trust me they'll get alot bigger then 7"! Check out a Discus competition sometime, normally they'll have quite large specimens on display.

At the end of the day a smaller depth and height produces a smaller volume of water for a given tank width than a slightly one. As always bigger is better, and I currently have an 18" tall tank and my largest discus makes this look pretty small. I would never attempt to keep adult discus in a 15" tall tank.

I doubt the two inches between 16" and 18" of height or depth would in itself stunt the fish, but the lower water volume coupled to poor maintenance would. It you keep the water sweet and the discus have room to move around there shouldn't be any problems. Though of course your discus would be happier with more room.
