Cycling a Discus tank

If you can take the carbon out then great but if you can than dont use that filter. I do not have the same Discus as in my Avatar but I do have small 1"ers.
Wat is a gravity system and i may just buy another ac300 so both sides match and only use one sponge if i use more than one i would have to buy another pump n i dont want to do that . I will be using a tetra tec 200, it has 2 valves so 1 line will go to a air wand n the other will go to the sponge. Im hoping the AC filter is very quiet cuz the tank sits right next to my bed and i dont want it to be loud.

I only have one AC500 and it comes with an extention. I do not know the size of the pipe. As for the gravity system ill have to find some info on it because its kind of hard to explain.

Hi, i am finally ready to set up a discus tank and I have the tank it is a 72g bf tank. I am waiting for the supplies to come, should arrive on wednesday, i will set it up then. I plan on using a betta to cycle the tank. Is this ok? How long will it take? How would i do a fishless cycle? thanx for ur help
A betta won't do the job alone, as the tank is way too big for that. Don't use balas either, they probably wouldn't survive a cycle. If you want to do a cycle with fish I would suggest a large school of danios or quite a few guppies, which can be gotten rid of after the cycle by returning them to your LFS or feeding them to your other fish. Good luck!

Why take fish and put them in an unstable enviroment only to have them die from high ammonia? Just do the fishless cycle. Its faster and easier.

Fish Guy, I know this may sound stupid but is there a reason y ur tank is not filled to the top. sry its just that i always fill mine to the top, just a little curious. thanx

I only fill mine to the very top of the trim. Usaully you cant see the waterline but hey water evaporates.

lol, true that. Do u think it is neccessary to have to heaters? I have a 300w visi therm, at the moment. I think its enough but y have 2? thanx

FFG i will be keeping my discus at a Ph of 7.2 n wat temp should i keep them at. The water in TN is 7.2 out of the faucet and Gh last time i checked was 3 dropps( forgot how much that is). I checked my 55g community tanks water b4 a water change one day n the ph was also 7.2. Discus would be ok at a ph at 7.2 right? I do not plan on breeding them right now bcuz i caint find a lfs that would want to buy them. thanx

You will be fine with 7.2 pH but you HAVE to keep it constant. I would set the heaters for 85-86 degrees F.
